in a nutshell:
satanists in the Anton LeVey sense of the word, use the word satan to represent selfish intention and have no apologies for it.
they believe that mankind is supreme already and has no need for the spirit within.
those that really believe in this concept are utterly forsaken.

Jesus said, satan comes to steal, kill,ad destroy, but I have come to give you life, and life more abundantly!Been there, done, that, choose Life and remember satan has no power or authority over Yeshua Ha Messiah, (Jesus The Messiah) He spoke A WORD and they fled screaming! You might try doing a report on The power of The Messiah Jesus, and how He fulfilled thousands of prophecies, the Prophets spoke thousands of years ago, the percentage of such a phenomenon is astronomical into the billions of billions, EVERY ONE, because He Knows the END FROM THE BEGINNING! He has written the judgment for satan, his angels, and all who have rejected The Only True and Living God, of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and all Gods, family through out the generations, so, I suggest, a life permeating report choice, the decision is yours! I set before you, Life, and death, Blessing, and cursing, choose This Day, whom you will serve! ( LIFE is Good!)the best answer of the day!!!

Satanists would tell you it's the "worship of the self". Most people who identify themselves as Satanists are the "LaVeyian" variety. Anton LaVey was a liar, fraud, bankrupt wife beating pimp. BTW, one idiot actually had the nerve to say "Everyone beat their wife in the fifties" when informed of this(even though he beat Diane from the 60's into the 80's). And no, not everyone did, and it was still wrong.
This shows that rather than standing on their own two feet, Satanists slavishly make excuses for their cult figure, not unlike they way Scientologists do fo L. Ron Hubbard.
LaVey was apraoched by Avon books to wrote a book on witchcraft to cash in on the occult craze of the 1960's. He cobbled together "The Satanic Bible" from a forgotten right-wing political tract (Where of the material from the Book of Satan comes from), Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, and the superstitous occult material of John Dee.
LaVey never really seemed to know what Satanism was himself. Some of his writings seemed atheistic, at other times he called Satan "the dark side of nature" and often refers to Satan as a personification. One thing is for certian, the Satanic Bible gives specific instructions on timing, tools to be used, specific rituals for sex spells, revenge spells, etc (The Book of Belial)., and it seemed he expected results.
Eventually, people realized the spells didn't work, and so began the whole "Well, it's really a philosophy" excuse. In the 1980's, when LaVey was living in poverty he then claimed he was shunning consumer materialism ( a complete role reversal from "Indulgence instead of abstinence!") ala Pee Wee Herman's "I meant to do that!"
LaVey claimed that nuts were given "the bum's rush" when trying to join the Church of Satan, but clearly nut was in the eye of the beholder. LaVey has admited to holding a "Cannibal feast" of a human leg in at least 3 books. The Satanic Bible &Satanic Rituals certainly describe many things most normal people would consider pychotic such as Nude girl is used as an altar (Satanic Bible, Satanic Rituals)A human skull is used in Die Elektrischen Vorspiele ritual (Satanic Rituals, p. 109)Human leg bone or arm bone is used in Homage to Tchort ritual (p.137)
Woman dressed as nun urinates before group into a bedpan in the Black Mass ritual (p.43) Urine is then sprinkled like holy water (p.44)Man climbs into coffin with nude woman (or nude man if he is gay) in Le Epais ritual (p.59).
As a "philosophy", Satanism could be boiled down to hedonism, which was hardly a new idea in the 1960's. Oddly enough, most Satanists don't fit the bill as swingers. Some seem to lead fairly uneventful lives. Here's an example:
"I've been forced to give up coffee - the acid was responsible for a minor ulcer and I can no longer take any chances with my health. This was my solitary vice - now it is gone. I do not drink, do not smoke, do not use recreational drugs and have nothing remotely resembling a sex life!"
--"Lord" Egan of "The First Church of Satan"
Wow! What a swinger! So then the picture begins to develop that Satanism is not so much a philosophy of life as it is a fantasy; a means to escape a life not worth living.

Here's a bit on the most common forms of satanism http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html along with links to websites. If I can remember/find the URL for the Temple of the Satanic Dawn, I'll edit and post that as well. An old friend of mine is a high priest there and will gladly answer your questions. They are religious satanists rather than philosophical satanists (LaVeyan) and are much more interesting, in my opinion.
I personally am not the least bit bothered by satanism. They are actually easier to deal with than most christians for me as they don't judge my religion. Where many christians will tell me I'm hellbound if I don't convert (or harass me in a misguided conversion attempt) most Satanists just say things like "Asa-Who?" or "Oh, the Hail Odinn, Hail Vidar kinda folks". I've actually dated several satanists of varying stripe over the years and found them to be just like anyone else, just with a much more strict moral code.
Yes, most do have a very strict moral code. It's fascinating stuff, really.
Honestly, I think christians created it by labeling anyone who didn't agree with them as "satanic".
Good luck with your research!

The Church of Satan has a good website.
Well, there are two types of Satanism, one is theistic and the other is symbolic. In theistic Satanism the practitioner believes that Satan is an actual deity. In symbolic Satanism the practitioner believes that Satan is symbolic of the dark aspects of the world and life and carnal nature, and it is a religion of the self. Some well known Satanist groups are the Church of Satan and the Temple of Set. The latter is based on the Egyption god Set which is basically the Egyptian Satan. There is LaVeyan Satanism which is probably the most well known branch of Satanism, and it was founded by Anton LaVey. The Church of Satan is the group founded by LaVey.
Different peoples have different ideas of the origin of the word Satan. In Sat/Tan Satanism (closely related to Taoism) Sat means "being" and Tan means "becoming". The words Sat and Tan together basically mean "stretching forth" of the universe and the things in it. You can find more information on Sat/Tan Satanism at Wikipedia.com. I've discovered that it's difficult to find information on this kind of Satanism.
I feel that LaVeyan Satanism is hypocritical. LaVey shows that he believes that Christianity is very dogmatic and ridiculus (this is very obvious in the Satanic Bible of which he wrote). And he obviously tries to attract people to his form of Satanism through shock factors and this was a turn off to me. (I was a LaVeyan Satanist for a while).
In Satanism there are four main demons. These include Satan, Lucifer, Leviathan, and Belial. These represent the four elements. An important symbol in LaVeyan Satanism and maybe other forms of Satanism, is the Baphomet. It is a goat head in an inverted star with two circles around it. Inside the two circles are five Hebrew words.
A religion related to theistic Satanism is Demonolatry or Daemonolatry. In this religion practitioners worship demons (lesser nature spirits). This religion includes many more demons than theistic Satanism and may include Satan as a demon but not as a higher demon. In theistic Satanism only Satan is worshipped (as a deity) but other demons may be lightly incorporated but Satan is always first in theistic Satanism. Demonolatry is more of a mystical religion than theistic Satanism and is polytheistic. It is an old pagan religion and is based in nature.
I heard on a radio interview of one of the priests of the Church of Satan that one does not have to practice magick to be called a Satanist. That it is more of a philosophy than a religion.
I have found many ideas in Satanism that make complete sense, but I don't believe in all of it. I am more interested in Sat/Tan Satanism than other forms of Satanism.

Satanism is another man created myth.
There may be supernatural phenomenons that need to be explained, but until we find out the cause, we should not relate them to religion. The human sensors are limited. Our hearing is inferior to some animals, our vision is inferior to some animals, etc. So it is possible that some people are more capable or susceptible to sense things that are out of our normal limitation, but that does not prove the existence of the man created god. The god that man created is not perfect although religious people claim that he is.
Maybe you can research to prove I am right or wrong.
Good luck.

If you are going to research something dangerous, do so by balancing it out with something that will save your mind.
Here is what St. Augustine said to Faustus the Magician:
You are so hardened in your errors against the testimonies of Scripture, that nothing can be made of you; for whenever anything is quoted against you, you have the boldness to say that it is written not by the apostle, but by some pretender under his name. The doctrine of demons which you preach is so opposed to Christian doctrine, that you could not continue, as professing Christians, to maintain it, unless you denied the truth of the apostolic writings. How can you thus do injury to your own souls? Where will you find any authority, if not in the Gospel and apostolic writings?
By going to other sources and especially to sourcery, you will do irreversible damage to yourself and to your eternal soul.

http://www.churchofsatan.com -- LeVayan Satanism
Also look for Temple of Set, which is a theistic satanism (that means -- it actually does worship a deific being of darkness).
Those are the two I'm most familiar with. I am a LeVayan satanist, though I've yet to formally apply for membership.

well there are two main forms of satanism theistic and atheistic or philosophical anyway the theistic form of satanism views satan as a force in the world and the athiestic version or philosophical version is more a form of self worship and they don't believe in an actual satan as he is more symbolic of man's carnal aka fleshly nature
