Cutting is just the way we deal with stressful situations and it is not a very good way to deal with it. I don't really know why we begin cutting in the first place but I do know that it is an addiction just as much any drug is. The reason it makes us feel good and feel relaxed is that it releases endorphins in our brain that make us feel better. It is an addiction which is why many people continue to do it even though they know it is bad. Also for many people it may be the only way they know to cope with any stressful situation. If they haven't learned any other ways to cope with anything then how could they stop cutting? I don't know for sure why anyone starts doing it. Maybe that's how a parent coped with stress and so the child learns to cope that way too or for a lot of people the act is related to a traumatic experience in childhood like abuse and that is where it all stems from. There are so many reasons for the beginning of it. It would really depend on the person. But it is possible to stop doing it. I know people who have. Don't lose hope. Get help; you'll be glad once you have conquered it.

I know what you mean when you say your lost. I have been a cutter myself, but stopped. It is not easy to stop, but it can be done.

The reason most of us cut is we feel out of control. When we cut, the pain is bringing us back into focus. We feel we have gained focus again.

We cut again when we need to focus again.

I got help going to a psychiatrist and taking some anti-depressant medicine. When you get help, which you must, because you can't stop yourself, you feel like it was just a faction of your life and it is gone!

God Bless You :)

I used to cut myself when I was hurting emotionally. I didn't want to cry in front of anyone because I have always been a tough girl. I don't know how or why it made me feel better, but I used to feel a feeling of accomplishment or relief, even though the problem was still there. I hated myself for doing that and I regret every moment of it because it becomes an addiction and you start to lose your friends. It almost cost me the love of my life. I also had to stop because I couldn't stand wearing long sleeves and pants in 110 degree weather and also because I unconciously roll my sleeves up and I didn't want anyone to see the cuts.

I have dealt with someone who suffered from a self mutilation disorder myself. I think the need to cut comes from emotions, its when a person is suffering from emotional distress and as a way of coping with the emotional overload they break the emotional pain with actual physical pain which doesn't last long and so they cut over and over. Try wearing a rubber band on your wrist and when you feel the need to cut snap the rubber band and that will satisfy your physical pain need!

I did it to try and get my anger with life out. But now I can't see the point cause every one of my scars remind me of an unhappy experience. I also can't feel the pain anymore. You should get help, see your doctor. SH it's the way to deal with life, I've realised this and I'm now trying to quit ! Good luck x

It's addictive. It's something you keep doing whether or not you know why, and it's nearly impossible to stop, even if you want to.
