I think most people sleep 6-8 hours a night, but if you feel completely rested and functional on 5, then you're good to go.

Different people need different amounts of sleep. The average is eight hours, but some people may need as much as ten and others may need as little as four. You are the best judge as to the amount of sleep you need. If you're only getting five hours of sleep and you're still tired, you definitely need to get more.
Why are you only getting five hours of sleep? Is it due to your schedule (school, work, social life, etc.)? If so, you may need to cut out a couple of things in order to get more rest. If you are unable to sleep more than five hours due to other sleep problems (you can't get to sleep, you can't stay asleep, you wake up frequently, etc.), talk to a doctor about medications that might help. There are also several homeopathic remedies on the market that might help you to get to sleep and stay asleep longer. Check Whole Foods, Wild Oats, or any other natural food and vitamin store. Good luck!

I know for sure for the last 2 months I have not been getting enough sleep. I fall asleep around 1-2 am and am back up at 6:30. I can not fall asleep at night and I don't know why. But I guess I am not the only one. I would think you need at least 7 hours per night??????

My doctor told me 8 hours is ideal, but that people vary by how much sleep they need. I need more ~ like 10 hours.
Since you said you feel tired, it seems to me that you need more sleep. Try increasing your time to 6 hours and see how you feel. If you are still tired, try 7. and so on.
****** Also, you might want to goto the doctor to see if you are anemic (have low iron) or hypothyroid (have low thyroid hormone) because both of these conditions will cause tiredness.

7-8 hours is normal. Five hours is not normal. If you are only getting 5 hours of sleep it will show on your face and your performance at work or school.

Everybody is different. Some people are pumped up and ready to go on five hours of sleep (like my Dad) and others need nine hours. I like to get 7-8 hours to feel good. Anything more or less, I feel like crap.

Normal varies for everyone, but the general rule is around 8hrs per night. 5hrs doesn't sound like enough, especially if you're tired all the time.
