I'm moving from Houston to L.A. soon but needs to find a place to live where would be safe and commute not to far from popular areas. I want to be close to the ocean and work force of my field. (Engineering and Architectural) Also looking to raise a family in the future so not a place too big of the city life.

As already mentioned, there are a number of places to live. Keep in mind, that SoCal is essential one large urban area, unlike other towns. There are a number of centers like West LA, Downtown LA, the South Bay, and Irvine, where you could get a job. The closer you are to your job, the less of a commute there will be. And believe me, the traffic is bad. It's just part of life here. In LA, there are places like Eagle Rock (I was born and raised there), Glendale, Pasadena, Altadena, La Crescenta, La Canada, Burbank, Sunland. In Orange County, there are many areas such as Brea, Fullerton, Orange, Tustin, Irvine, Lake Forest, Yorba Linda, Rancho Santa Margarita, and others.

The laws of real estate apply here. The closer you are to the desireable areas, the more you will pay. Less crime = more expensive living. Hopefully, you will find a nice balance. The cities I've given you are a good start, so good luck.

(One advantage to living in OC is its proximity to Disneyland. It's GREAT being an annual passholder, because you can go for a short time, and if it's crowded, you just get out and come back another day)

Hope this helps.

It really depends on where your job will be located. The ocean is no more than about 2 hours away from any suburb around Downtown LA. I've lived in LA my whole life so far and I hope you don't mind traffic because any reasonably priced area is going to be atleast a 30 - 45 minute drive from mid LA. You don't want to move to Watts or South LA if you can help it. Glendale is a nice area, it's close to Pasadena as well and close to the major freeways as another person mentioned. The San Fernando valley can be expensive to live and there are some not so great areas there too. East Los Angeles (such as El Sereno, City Terrace, Huntington Park, Boyle Heights) can be risky. Generally speaking prices go up the closer to the ocean and the closer to the mountains you are. Avoid Downtown and Hollywood.

Generalizing, the closer to the ocean the more expensive, but different neighborhoods also have different prices.

May people relocating here, start by getting their first job in Redlands as it is a growing new area and they keep needing new employees. Once established, you can drive around to other cities and look for other employment opportunities. (No I do not live in Redlands)
Forget the lady that replied about Houston. She needs to be reminded that prices are LOW in Houston because it is a Gawd Awful place, but then maybe she has never lived anywhere else.

OMG- you are in for a shock!!! Make sure you get a major pay increase! Housing in Houston is soooooooooo cheap compared to anywhere in L.A. You better check it out online before you make this move:

Sherrie- i have lived in both Houston and Calabasas- in addition to many other U.S. cities. I can tell you that you can get a gorgeous huge new home in a beautiful neighborhood with great schools for less than 400K in Houston. Now, I'm sure you know what that will buy you in L.A.- even Redlands, and that is not much.

Burbank, CA. It's in Los Angeles county but it's not associated with LA so it's safe and clean. About 30 minutes from the ocean. I'm raising my son here. The schools are excellent! Highly recommend!!!!

In general, the closer to the ocean, the more you will pay.

On the other hand, the farther away you live from your job, the more horrendous the commute.

I suggest you try to live as close as is reasonably possible to minimize the commute.

Tell us what city you will be working in and we can be more specific.
