I have read that this is hard to do. But someone at a computer magazine browbeat Microsoft into giving him one.

Are you trying to do a clean install from Vista? Is that your issue? I am a bit confused.

You can get a copy of Vista by purchasing it, but I would not buy it even if it were free, for the following reasons:
1. Vista's Debut is fraught with problems. Printers, video cards, and sound cards, for example, often worked with XP, but wont work with Vista until Microsoft gets around to publishing Vista drivers for them in about two years or so.
2. Even if you could get all the drivers, there are 114,000 or more viruses unique to Windows that are just waiting to infect Windows Operating Systems, slowing them down and causing hundreds of other problems. AntiVirus software will be mandantory, further slowing down your computer.
3. You will need dozens and dozens of bug fixes for Windows to (try!) to keep it working. Microsoft calls them "updates".
4. Microsoft will try to get still more money from you, with things like "activation" issues that frustrate people so much they wind up buying several copies of an operating system for a single computer because, when hardware is upgraded, Microsoft further frustrates users by requiring reactivation. If you change too many parts of your computer, Microsoft will want you to call them and explain why you shouldnt buy a new license for your computer. They even have many "false positives" which makes people with a
genuine copy of Windows feel like a criminal because it continuosly says it is fake.
In short, save your money and get Kubuntu instead for free and be free of virii as well. www.kubuntu.org
