I've heard so much about colonic cleansing being used to decrease the size of a person's belly. I am losing weight by walking three miles, four times a week, but I can't seem to lose this annoying pooch. Any brand names that work, from those that have tried and succeeded?

I am 48 years old, have three kids, 5'6 and 145 lbs. Not obese, by any stretch of the imagination, but just can't seem to get rid of this stomach. My waist is nice and thin and the rest of me looks pretty good. I just can't stand this anymore!

While it is possible to loose weight from the procedure (3-15lbd depending on how congested you are), this is not the main goal. The main goal of the procedure is to remove parasites from the colon.

Here's a good website that will give you all the answers you need to know about the procedure: http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/common/standard/transform.jsp?requestURI=/healthatoz/Atoz/ency/colonic_irrigation.jsp

Definition

Colonic irrigation is also known as hydrotherapy of the colon, high colonic, entero-lavage, or simply colonic. It is the process of cleansing the colon by passing several gallons of water through it with the use of special equipment. It is similar to an enema but treats the whole colon, not just the lower bowel. This has the effect of flushing out impacted fecal matter, toxins, mucous, and even parasites, that often build up over the passage of time. It is a procedure that should only be undertaken by a qualified practitioner.

Purpose

Anyone suffering from gas, bloating, cramping pains, acne and other skin complaints, arthritis, and a list of bowel complaints such as diverticulitis and irritable bowel etc., may benefit from colonic irrigation. In particular, cancer patients are often advised to undertake a course of colonic irrigation sessions as an essential part of their treatment. When a biological cancer therapy begins to enable the body to breakdown a cancerous mass, it is essential that speedy and effective elimination of the resulting toxins is achieved.

Colon and bowel cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and alternative practitioners insist that it can be prevented by efficient hygiene procedures. Providing that care is taken to replace the natural organisms that flourish in the bowel, many health benefits can be expected from colonic irrigation. In general, alternative practitioners maintain that an ill-functioning bowel is the source of all disease, and therefore keeping it clean will be an effective protection against this.

Removing large amounts of toxic matter relieves the patient and can lead to the alleviation of symptoms such as arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, candidiasis, and a host of other illnesses. Properly executed, colonic irrigation can help restore normal peristaltic action to a sluggish bowel, thus reducing the need for more hydrotherapy treatments over time. In addition, removing the layer of fecal matter which coats the intestines in many individuals allows improved assimilation of the nutrients from foods and can alleviate symptoms of vitamin and other nutrient deficiencies. Many alternative health practitioners consider some form of hydrotherapy for the bowel to be essential in the treatment of degenerative diseases.

As far as loosing your "pooch", the quickest way is to cut out red meats, starches, breads, sugars, alcohal, and sodas.

Eat veggies (salads are good), soups, and drink TONS of water. If you get hungry between a meal, drink water to fill up.

In moderation eat white meats, and fruits (fruits contain natural sugars, and that can put on weight)

Practice portion control. Yes, you'll feel hungry at first, but think of your goal, and soon your stomach will start shrinking and you won't have that feeling anymore.

Eat 5 times a day. A small breakfast. A mid-morning snack, such as an apple. A small lunch. A mid-afternoon snack, such as carrots. A lite dinner. Do not eat any later than 7pm (6pm is better.)

Go exercise for at least an hour a day, incorporating weight training. Weight training builds muscle. Muscle burns fat. You get the idea. It also gives tone and definition.

In my personal opinion, if you incorporate a balanced diet, and exercise program, colonics will help to detoxify your body and give you a boost.

Good luck to you!

Listen up Roberta. That "annoying pooch" will NOT go away just by walking. You should have stated your age, but I will give you some gidelines so you can get your objective. I'm not a certified trainer BUT I do give professional advice on body reconstitution seminars because I've a bunch of experience on it.
1. Colon cleansing can be done once in a while, but it is not the ideal way to empty your bowels, because that cleansing (wheter it´s by enema or simply by laxants) may interfere PERMANENTLY with your peristatic movements, and believe it or not they can drive you obese!!!
So, the guideline is to get good old fiber on your diet. You can do it simply by taking equal ammounts of all bran and another cold cereal for breakfast. You should use lactose free milk for your purposes. After two weeks doing this, you should add some all bran (with water, not milk) at your dinner. And after a month you should add a table spoon of all bran with your main meal.
2. There are foods you have to avoid: Hot coffee (specially on an empty stomach) and beer are absolutely prohibited. You can drink red wine (moderately) with your food. Avoid as much as possible natural or artificial orange juice and lemonades.
3. You should eat such fruits as mangos and bananas (in small portions), because certain sugars fuel up intestinal movements.
4. You should drink 2 liters of water a day. Not much more because you will put your kidneys at risk, but not less.
5. Now, VERY IMPORTANT, you should discuss with your doctor a laboratory feces test, because I've seen so many obese girls with chronic vermins and bacteria infections. Whether you believe it or not, while this infections make you weaker they also make you fatter and soft looking. They affect skin appearance and elasticity too, all contribuiting for a soft belly look.
6. Contact me for a couple of tricks regarding specific exercises.

Don't eat late at night. Eating late at night can cause you to store more fat in your waist and stomach. Stop eating 3 hours before you go to bed. If you need a snack, eat something healthy like a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts (unsalted). Eat often, but in small portions. The less your body peaks and falls on the blood sugar scale, the less likely it will be to overeat and/or store unwanted fat. Ideally, cut calories, but don’t starve yourself. If you eat the right foods and eat often enough, you won’t find yourself eating huge portions and overeating in general. Eat fats like fish oil, sunflower oil, flax seed oil. Also whole grains, legumes, and vegetables and limiting meats. Ease up on the salt and gassy foods that cause you to bloat. Get out and move. After what you put in your mouth, what you do with your body will determine if you can flatten your belly. Get at least 30 minutes of cardio exercise every day, along with a properly executed abdominal workout. Train your body with strength training activities. Adding muscle tone will help you perform all daily activities as well. You can also try these exercises: Belly rolls strengthen your vertical abdominal muscles. Sit with your legs bent, with feet flat on the floor and arms straight in front of you. Exhale and roll back until your lower back touches the ground and stop for a moment. Inhale and roll back up. Repeat 15 times. In the same position, exhale and roll back until your shoulder blades touch the ground and momentarily stop. Inhale and roll back up. Repeat 15 times. Tummy curls work on your horizontal abdominal muscles. Lie on your back and bend your knees at an (almost) 90-degree angle to the floor with your feet raised slightly higher than your knees. Breathe out, lifting your butt and rolling back to your shoulder blades. Inhale and roll to your tailbone and stop. Try not to let your bottom touch the ground. Repeat 20 times. Cross crunches are hard work but they're miracle workers at cinching waists. You will need a liter bottle filled with water for this one. Lie on your back with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle with the floor. With your left hand cradling your head, hold the water bottle in your right hand. Lift your head and shoulders off the ground and reach across your body, so the bottle is outside your left knee. Pulse 20 times and then switch sides and repeat. Tailbone lifts work your lower abdomen and can help reduce a belly pouch. Lay on your back, with your arms stretched straight over your head and legs fully extended and crossed in the air. While breathing out, lift your tailbone then slowly lower as you inhale. To get maximum effect from this, don't let your bum just drop, you want to resist on the way down. Repeat 30 times. This is a favorite of mine as inverted crunches work your lower back which improves posture and strength. Lie on your belly with your arms in front of you as though you are flying like Superman. Exhale, lifting your right arm and left leg as high as you can. As you inhale, lower slowly. Switch, lifting your left arm and right leg. Repeat 20 times. In the same position, lift both arms and legs twenty times.
