I personally would go with the Toyota. They are extremely reliable. I've seen Toyota's running after 400,000 miles. It still depends on how well you take care of it though.

Both cars are
1) Great on Gas
2) Reliable
3) Affordable
But there are distinct differences,
Honda Civics are more stylish & have more potential considering the thousands of aftermarket parts available to significantly change your Civic. I don't see as much with the Corollas and Civics seem to be more aggressive looking than the Corollas.
If your looking for a car just to get from point A to point B on a regular basis then I would suggest the Corolla, where it lacks on the aesthetic quality it makes up for on its longevity. These cars can go well over 200,000 miles without any true maintenance even if you beat it up.

For resale, Honda beats toyota (Eventhough its close). I would go with a honda. Both are great, reliable gas sipping cars but the New Honda Civic Just looks better (most of the Hondas old and new look better than the corolla.
I have owned both and the Honda is my Favorite

both Honda and Toyota are good reliable cars but I believe you can get into a toyota cheaper than a honda. I'm not real familiar witht e civic but I know the accord has chip key and a lot of have to take to dealer type stuff to get worked on

These vehicles are virtually tied in their durability and operating costs. If I had to choose, I would opt for the Toyota simply because I have owned several, still have a Solara. Toyotas score consistently high in consumer surveys and publications. I'd own a Honda too but the Honda dealers I've had experience with simply do not want to talk a deal. My local Toyota dealer, on the other hand, has treated me very well. I don't think you can go wrong with either car.

Civic is the best, gives mileage around 10-11 kpl in city. There are no technical issues with this vehicle so far & service support is also good compared to toyota (depends on the city).
Toyota Corolla is also the good car which gives mileage of 8-9 kpl. From my point of view civic is good.

If you are looking for comfort and ride quality the corolla is better.
Fuel efficiency of both the cars is the same
The civic has a higher resale value and is a better driver's car than the corolla.(good handling and steering response, slick gearbox and pedals)

Personally, I am a big fan of Toyota. My Toyota pick-up has 220000 miles on it, and it still runs fine, drives fine. Is a great truck. I dont know the reliability of honda.
