Tricky... I am in that same situation myself...!
You could try asking pointed questions and gauge the response but it does look like the answer previous to mine is the best way (maybe a little gentler) just ask straight out.
I think I shall do the same myself...!

just give yourself some time first, then you can plan an evening out, spend time chatting up about usual things, then you can go ahead with your statement: that you fancy him

you have to just come out with it however it sounds, life moves pretty fast if you dont stop and look around once in a while you miss it. take it from one who knows!!!

i just keep hanging out with them and see where it goes from there and if they like you or you like them eventually you will find out
