Australia is quite expensive to fly to. You need to have advance purchase as the ticket prices go off availability. There are air consolidators that agents use, but there again has to be available in a certain class in order to get a pre-contracted fare with the airlines that the consolidators acquire from the airlines.

The cheapest way used to be by Garuda if you don't mind 19-20m stops on the way and the best way of getting around is use your thumb. or there is an area in Sydney where travellers returning to their own country meet and sell on the cars and vans they have been using to move around in. all very high milage but sure to sell when your time is up, ther is always a queue of new travellers waiting for cheap transport.

Try China Airlines there the cheapest to buy and the tickets are open for 12mths.

They fly outta LAX 4 times a week to Aust but thats if ya dont mind a stop over in Tiwan..... but the bonus thing about the stop over ya wont get jet lagg when ya get here so you wont feel bregged out on arrival.

If you have some frequent flyer miles, you may be able to purchase extra ones to get you up to the level you will need for the trip to Oz.
When I go, I will be using the miles I have and purchasing the extra needed ones to go first class - I figure it's going to cost me around $650 + my miles for round trip, but for that long a journey, I'm going for it.
