I have had a jar of this peanut butter for months and I use it to give my dogs thier medication.. just a tiny bit. but I will no longer use it for them. ..

but I am wondering.. Can dogs get salmonella?
as I've seen other people give dogs raw foods... and stray dogs must get into garbage with it all the time?

My dogs have seem to show no sign.. but if they did get it.. would they just vomit or have dirreaha?

I myself have eaten Peter Pan peanut butter in the past few weeks with the code they are now warning people about - "2111" and I have not been sick from it.. so I myself am wondering if it had salmonella in it.. I should have gotten sick from it, right? but I won't eat anymore of it.

Thanks to anyone who can offer helpful advice on this!

Dogs might be able to but not from the same Salmonella that
makes humans sick. In the past few weeks Peter Pan Peanut Butter AND Great Valley peanut butter contained traces of salmonella.

Why It Is Harder for Dogs to Get It:

The specific molecules on the outside of a bacteria cell will determine if that cell can attach to the intestines of the animal. Other molecules determine if that cell can then invade and infect the intestinal cell.

Dogs and humans have intestinal cells with different characteristics, so it takes just the right kind of pathogenic bacterium to make each species sick.

I adopted a puppy back in november who came down with kennel cough and just had a really bad immune system. She was on medication for that and we would give it to her with peanut butter...peter pan peanut butter that we just found out is the "infected" batch. She got really really sick and had a fever of about 105 for a couple days... about $500 in vet bills later we still had no idea what was wrong with her. I did stop using the peanut butter and started putting her meds into soft dog treats, and then she just got better on her own. We have no idea if the peanut butter caused her sickness, even the vets didnt know what was making her sick. Just to be safe, I would definitely not let your dogs near that peanut butter!!!

Not all jars of this particular Peanut Butter were contaminated
and Dogs have more of a tolerance for most bacteria than do
humans...
I would not worry about giving it to the dogs..

There's no guarantee that particular jar had salmonella, and no guarantee that you'd get sick if it did, but throw it out to be safe. Salmonella, though unpleasant, is short-lived and not fatal, so don't worry.

Dogs can get salmonella, and it usually causes vomiting and diarrhea. I would return the jar and be thankful that none of you had any problems.

I wouldn't doubt it. My dog got sick from rotten grease, and was vomitting blood, so it's not like they aren't prone to bacterial infections. Just to be safe, I would switch to Jiffy!

Yikes! i don't think you need to worry about the dogs, i feed my boy raw chicken now and again. dogs have a different digestive system so i think they can handle bacteria that humans can't. i'd give your vet a call to be sure, and chuck that tainted peter pan ASAP! i think you'd already be sick if you were going to get it so it's probably fine.

They don't all have it but they can. Bring it back to the store & they'll give you a new one. Don't risk yourself or your puppy!
