Good benefit packages help employers recruit and retain good employees. The benefit of tuition reimbursement not only provides the recruitment/retention benefits, but also provides the employer with employees better trained and therefore better able to accomplish more difficult duties. One thing the employer needs to do is to have promotion opportunities available for the newly trained employees. If such promotion opportunities are not available in-house, then the employee is apt to become dissatisfied and may seek employment elsewhere. It doesn't make much sense to pay for an employee to take classes if those classes don't help with promotions. Another thing the employer should do is require the employee to stay with the company for a specific period of time (depending on the amount spent for the tuition) or to reimburse the employer for the tuition expenses. People who work for the federal government can apply for tuition-reimbursement. The government requires that the education be applicable to federal jobs. I had to agree to continue my employment with the Air Force for two years after I completed my M.S. which was primarily paid for by the government.

when an employer has a tuition reimb plan for their employees it benefits the employer is a number of ways...
The employee is more likely to stay.. the employer will usually have a screening program for employees that the employer feels would benefit the company with continuing education. There are also tax benefits to the employer for setting up this program. The employee is more likely to stay with that employer with this program in place... cutting down on employee turnover... it's very costly for an employer to train an employee, only to have that employee take that training and go to a competitor.
