I want to pay for everything to go to Police Academy myself, do any states allow this preferably in Georgia, SC, or Florida; I am willing to look at other states as well.?

Will I have a more likely chance of getting hired or pretty much the same? I am also taking additional courses in language, weapon training, additional law enforcement courses not provided by the academies, and advance hand to hand combat. I preferably just want to do basic beat patrol.

Basically want I am asking, with all this what am I looking at in law enforcement.

Yes, you can apply and go get post certified in Nevada by paying for it yourself.

I'm not sure about those states.. but i know in the state of Illinois you can go to a Police academy without being hired at a Department.
You just have to pass a background check, written exam and oral interview to be accepted into the academy and then pay the $5000 total cost for the academy.

Most states will allow you to pay for yourself to attend the police academy. However, there is one caveat:
You need a sponsor.
Unless you have an agreement with the sheriff or a chief of police, you cannot attend the police academy.

In my own state, Alabama, there are countless numbers of "certified" officers that obtained their "certification" by attending a formal academy even though not currently employed by a department. They allow applicates to join the reserve units and then go through sponsored training.

There are several state "certification" academies thoughout Alabama of which one, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, provides certification courses to "reserve" officers. It is a longer version of the regular academy in that they only provide training after normal hours and on weekends.

There is a minimal fee for training which is paid by the attendee and if memory serves me correctly, half is paid in the beginning with the remainder owed by graduation.

Because many departments are on limited budgets, it is difficult for agencies to hire and send officers to the academy. Economically, it is easier to hire from the pool of applicants who have their minimum standards already in possession.

Hope this helps!

Best wishes!

a lot of states will allow you to pay for yourself to go through the academy becasue then they don't have to pay for you to do it. typically the academis have their own website and you can do the research and find out or stop in some of your local police departments and ask them. you'll get your best answer from the source.

It depends on the state. Contact your state's criminal justice training facility or academy and ask. No in Washington State, you must be sponsored by a police agency.

Most academies don't charge anything. You usually have to pay for your own gun, uniform, books etc... but there is no tuition charge. In fact, some departments offer paid academies meaning they will actually pay you to go through it because they are desperate for qualified candidates. I suggest that you contact the agencies that you're interested in and find out what they have to offer. Most agencies have websites now so you might be able to get the information you're looking for by doing a search. Good luck!

You sound as though you would make a wonderful officer! In CA, we actually pay many cadets to go through our Police Academy to become officers! If CA is interesting to you, check with Eureka City Police Dept, and ask when you might be able to sign up for this. We are on the ocean, in the Sequoia redwoods.............I was born here, I love it!

NO..... the academy is a government funded entity that is by acceptance only every state I can think of. Your best bet is to simply apply and take the oral and written exam like everyone else. When you go in for the oral exam you can mention the private courses you've taken to add to your resume so they know you are qualified.

As far as i know most academies allow you to pay your own way. You'd be better off letting the police dept. pay your way and save that money.
