It's made out of wood and I don't want to marr the finish.

Depending upon how large and how heavy, and it's construction, you may be able to simply use 4 nails. 2 to support the top or sides, maybe hanging from the handles. The other 2 nails go in the wall, underneath the tray/ platter to keep the first 2 nails from supporting the all of the weight. I did this with a large picture that didn't have a hanging bracket and surprisingly enough the support nails at the bottom of the picture did not "stick out" or distract from the picture.

Buy a really big plate hanger or fashion one yoursef with springs and wire.
