In our search for the "truth", my husband and I attended a pentecostal church for about a year. We never understood their basis for the beleif in speaking in tongues, no matter how many times we read over the scriptures they gave us, and did our own research. They showed us the scriptures in acts that talked about how this was the sign that God gives when the Holy Spirit has entered into you, and yes it did have accounts of this happening, but nowhere did it ever say that this was the only sign, that it would happen every time someone received the Holy Spirit, and that it would be the sign for the rest of time.We beleived it for awhile, but we always had that little bit of doubt. When we would hear some women speak in tongues, it would be a different language, actually sounding like words, and then some of them would just sound like they were rolling their tongue, no words whatsoever. We couldn't understand why if they were actually giving messages, why there were no words coming out, just noises. And they also forgot that there are some who don't speak in tongues, but are interpreters, because if the message is not interpreted, it is meaningless. And these people were never present, or just didn't use their gift. Then there were some who claimed that they had received the Holy Spirit, but we never heard them speak in tongues during the services. Some did every time. And one man had been attending the church for 6 years, and still had not spoken in tongues, and he was being torn apart spiritually because he couldn't figure out how he was displeasing God. We would lay hands on him all the time and pray for him to receive the Spirit, but he never did. It was very confusing, we were never given straight answers about it, like how often will you speak in tongues- every time you are filled with the spirit?Or just the first time it is entered into you- then why do people continue to do it and some don't? And why isn't anyone interpreting the messages? And there were times when we felt so filled with the Spirit, but we never had the urge to speak in tongues, and we couldn't understand what else you had to feel to have the spirit? We eventually left because we couldn't find answers to the questions we had about it. We have other beleifs now.

Praying in tongues when not in a church setting is a prayer language between me and God....I may not understand but He does and His Spirit is the one that gives me the words to say.....

In a church setting, it is to edify the believers and needs an interpretation. (per the apostle Paul...no more than 3 in one meeting) God is not the author of confusion.

Actually we're speaking in His language when we speak in tongues.....but He does understand English.

"The gift of tongues" is one of the gifts given to believers by God. sometimes the tongue is understood, sometimes it isn't. sometimes the tongue is interpreted, sometimes it isn't.

It is given for edification of the church and the individual believer.

God understands English and god understands tongues. God understands and works according to our heart.

Certainly there are misuses and conterfeit gifts. But this does not invalidate the genuine gift.

god bless

So glad you brought this up today. I was just reading the magazine "Discover". There was a little blurb:

"University of Pennsilvania psychiatrists find that speaking in tongues shuts down brain areas responsible for executive function and thought control."

Very interesting...
