I live in an apartment complex, and for the past week they've been working on the apartment complex next door. They're painting it, using paint thinner and paint, and the strong chemical smell has been wafting into my non-insulated apartment for several days now. I feel like I've been unusually foggy-headed over these past days. Could that by why? The other complex is run by a different management company, but should I complain about this? (As in "You should've warned the local residents that you were going to be using these chemicals") I'm really upset about the situation, since the painters told me yesterday that this will be going on for a MONTH! Any advice appreciated... thanks.

You should complain to the local civic authorities though they won't likely be able to help. There are rules about creating obnoxious sounds and odors but fumes from paint are generaly accepted. I would suggest buying an air fillter unit that has a carbon filter and moves lots of air. Also I would try to ventilate the space when the fumes outside are the least, so probly open windows in the early morning, then close windows just before the smell usualy starts. Leave air cleaner on all the time.

Good Luck

You're overreacting a bit there. Carcinogens do indeed increase your risk of cancer, but only through prolonged repeated exposure. A single one-off incident is not going to significantly affect your risk. It's much like smoking- a single cigarette won't give you cancer; smoking for several years may very well do so. If the compounds you were dealing with were so dangerous that a single inhalation would give you cancer, there would definitely be more stringent safety procedures in place. If you're concerned, you should speak to your supervisor.

I'd definitely talk with the landlord...if they don't do anything, speak with your landlord. I'm sure he'd be pretty upset to know that his tenets are being inconvenienced by the neighbors' painting. In the meantime, try using a fan to get rid of the fumes or maybe an air purifier.

buy masks (dust masks) and wear them when u get home.
put a towel at the bottom of your door so the fumes will not seep thru.
open a window in your apartment so there is airflow.
this is dangerous and u should take precaution and try not to breathe too much.
Get the landlord to take off on the rent for all this misery.

Yes, I would say something to management. You pay rent and have no reason to feel like you are being annoying or pushy. It might be as simple as management giving the painters a fan and requesting they open a window.

The use of an air purifier will help somewhat.
