only get a decorator recommended by Friends or family. get about 3 quotes and you'll see they should all be about the same. the cost depends on the size of the room, if its empty or is full of furniture that needs to be moved, the condition of the room, etc., but for an average room you should expect to pay £300 to £450.

A room costs anything from $100-thousands and thousands.
Decorators are trained to work within your budget. So, decide what you are looking for. What you want what you don't want. Figure out how much you are willing to spend and go from there.
Call some local decorators and find out about pricing. It is different depending on your location.

Contact your local chapter of the ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and explain where you are & what you want done. Designers have different fee structures. Some will simply add a percentage to furniture you purchase through them and will take you shopping at "to the trade only" showrooms. Some will design an entire room for you and charge by the hour. Still others will charge by the hour. Your ASID should be able to give you the designer's education, specialty, and refer you to a few designers in your area that will work best for your application. Thus, it is difficult to asses what your room will cost without knowing what your project entails.
If you are on a very limited budget, you may want to go completely another route. Many retail furniture stores, like Ethan Allen or Thomasville, offer free design services. Of course, they expect that you will purchase your furniture through them, but they are trained and perfectly able to give you guidance.

Try to find out from your friends/family/neighbours if they have used a decorator, recommendation is best, then you know how good a job they do and have an idea what they charge and if they were worth it.
