Much can cross the "blood barrier" into breast milk so babies can potentially have things passed to them through the mother.
It is just for protection - why take chances when there is risk involved, although with a very clean and conscientious artist, small?
Also, in today's litigious society, I don't know of any professional artist that would take the chance. If something ever did happen to that baby, guess who would be looked upon as the person responsible?

As a heads up, you can...but you have to make sure that the studio that you go to will tattoo a breastfeeding mom. The ink is injected below your epidermis and immediately below your dermis level. The ink cells are too large to get in your milk ducts BUT you need to make sure that the studio that you goes to uses sterile techniques and such to avoid any germ related problems and such - because anything that you're exposed to, your baby is also exposed to due to the breastmilk. I contacted my dr, my daughter's dr and la leche league to ask questions about it and all 3 said that it was ok and not harmful to do. Make sure that after you get your tattoo that you care for your tattoo exactly the way that your artist told you to.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions...I researched this stuff like there was no tomorrow before getting my tattoo.

I would strongly suggest you NOT get a tattoo while breastfeeding. There is a chance, however small, that you could contract a disease ( hepatitis would be more likely than AIDS but both are POSSIBLE, as well as other unfun diseases) and you would then run a high risk of passing that on to your baby. Really, it can wait. I waited through two pregnancies and two years of breastfeeding until my body was my own again before I went and had it done. I dunno, it just seems like a moral imperative to protect your child and restrain yourself from anything that might possibly cause them harm. I assure you, tattoo artists will still exist after you wean your baby, it can wait.

I think saying "what are the risks if you do it anyway" is quite possibly the answer you're looking for.
That's the worst thing I've ever heard.
If there's a suggested risk, what do you think?

there is a risk to the baby if you get sick or an infection. for instance if you go to a place that doesn't sanitize their equipment or use new needles, you could get hepatitis or HIV. that can be passed to your baby via breast milk.

If you cared about your baby and the father of your baby why would you spend money trying to get strangers to look at your boobs.
