For free (or the price of a $3 MTA day pass) you can:

* see all the tourist stuff in Hollywood (gawk at the star-studded sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard, see the hand prints at the Chinese Theater, and catch a glimpse of the Hollywood sign)
* go inside the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, see their ornate lobby, and check out the small museum in their atrium
* check out surfers at Malibu or Sunset beach
* go hiking or have a picnic in Griffith Park
* see street performers at Venice Beach
* admire the mansions in Beverly Hills and West L.A.
* visit El Pueblo, the historic site that was the original village of Los Angeles
* take a walking tour of the downtown architecture
* check out locations where TV shows or movies were filmed

Most of the attractions in L.A. itself (as opposed to the nearby amusement parks) are quite cheap. Kids often enjoy the tar pits and the Peterson Automotive Museum on Wilshire, west of downtown. You can also eat good food cheaply by enjoying ethnic cuisine in one of the neighborhoods.

Another option once baseball season starts is to catch a game at Dodger Stadium. Top-level seats are dirt cheap.

dmb pretty much summed it up.

Also consider

Either or both Getty Museums
The Natural History Museum
The California Science Center

Leonis Adobe
Olvera Street/China Town

That's all I can think of off-hand

Enjoy your visit.

I like to go to Venice Beach and watch all the "interesting" people go by.

if you want to wait in line - you can go to a taping on a tv show, some require tickets ahead of time.

look at walk of fame in hollywood or hand and foot prints and the chineese theater

Getty museum charges for parking but is REALLLLY good
