I had two kidney stones the size of grains sand and the pain was all out of proportion to their size. Have you asked your doctor what he thinks it is? Does he give you an answer? If he has no other suggestions then see either a specialist (Urologist) or change doctors. There is no reason not to know, or do something about a pain that bad. If your present Dr isn't interested enough to find out what it is, he isn't interested enough in you for you to keep him.

My husband was born with a bad kidney it develops stones all the time. If the pain is running from your back to the side it is stones. Try to drink a lot of water and cranberry juice. Walk as much as you can, the stone may be lodged somewhere and this is how you get it to move and when you urinate the stone should pass.

There is a book that teaches about muscles, pain and referred pain anywhere in the body. The principle is that the muscles get knots called trigger points which make the muscles tight that then press on nerves. It teaches how to get them to release which gets rid of the pain.
The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
I also use a chiropractor and massage therapist as needed.

Kidney stones usually pass out of the body by themselves...
But if you are in a lot of pain, there is probably one that
requires the attention of your doctor....
If not, it hopefully should go away soon..drink plenty of water.

Hope you feel better..................
