Help! I have a Corgi puppy and we are having a hard time potty training her. We have potty pads in the kitchen and we take her to the pad to go potty. Most of the time she will go for us. The problem is if we don't take her to the potty pad she will go where ever she wants to. I know it takes time for her to understand what she is supose to do. Should we keep her in the kitchen and only bring her out when we can give her 100% attention until she gets the idea. Do you think she will finally get it. Please help. I don't want her to think that she is in trouble when we leave her in the kitchen. I am afraid she might get afraid to go in the kitchen thinking she might get lock up.

If I train her to go outside, what do I do when I leave. She is too little to be in the back yard by herself

First and most important thing to use when housebreaking a puppy is a crate. Now make sure you use a crate constructed totally of wire not the plastic travel crate. The puppy should be in the crate at all times unless you can totally have your eyes on him. If he whines while in the crate ignore him! If you go to him while he is whining it will not reassure him, it will teach him that all he has to do is whine and someone will come. Only go to him when he is quiet. When he is taken out of the crate he needs to be brought outside immediately. Use the same door everytime and bring him to the same place each time. If he is small enough to carry it is better to carry him to the pottying spot so he doesnt have an accident on the way. When he does eliminate praise him tremendously as if he just spoke to you in japanese. Giving him a small treat works wonders too not a biscuit, that takes too long to eat. a piece of hotdog or dog jerky treat works very well. The times a puppy will have to eliminate is: 1.when he comes out of his crate 2. 15-20 min after eating or drinking anything 3. When waking up from a nap 4. after playing and running.
If your puppy made a mistake in the house and you didnt see him make it its too late to punish he will have no idea that he did it. You have to catch him in the act and react at that time. Never ever call your puppy to you to punish him he will think he is being punished for coming to you and that could be dangerous if he decides to run into the street and wont come back when called. anyway the other thing that is very important when training is that you will have urine smell in your carpets and floors. It is very important to neutralize that odor or your dog will eliminate there again. A dog can smell 1 part urine in a million parts water so Resolve or Glory just wont work. Go to a pet store and get the odor neutralizer called Natures Miracle. When the puppy has an accident use the neutralizer on it. You see, with dogs when they smell urine it makes them feel like they have to eliminate. Just like us when we hear water running. above all dont get discouraged and dont EVER hit your puppy!!!! May take 30 days but it will work just follow those simple rules and you and your puppy will be much happier. Good Luck! P.S. The reason I said to use the same door every time is that you will start to notice your puppy hanging around that door when he has to eliminate. You can even go another step and hang a bell on the doorknob and find a way for him to ring it before you open the door possibly jumping up at it. He will figure it out trust me.

and once he is housebroken . he dont need to be in the crate unless your gonna leave .him to go to work ect
just so there is no miisunderstanding lol

Puppies can be difficult. You can assume that an animal can hold its urges about 1 hour for every month up to about 8 months. The best thing I can reccommend is confine your puppy to a small space when you are home, make that their "safe zone." They can go there to sleep, eat, rest, and hide if they are scared. In that space, they should be well hidden from "danger."

There are two very important things to remember about dogs, they are pack animals and they are den animals. In the wild the alpha dogs look out for all the puppies and the smaller weaker dogs, at home you are the alpha dog, and the puppy has to know that. You need to be the protector and the disciplinarian. The "den" I used was a small hallway that was tile floored, and small enough that accidents would result in discomfort. The den area should be just big enough for the animal to move around but not run and go crazy. The den space should have a bed and a feeding area, that way the animal knows that this is where they are going to eat and sleep, so soiling it will be uncomfortable.

I personally hate crates, but if you use one, it should be just big enough for the dog to stand up, lay down, and turn around. The crate should be in the "den area" and the animal should be kept in it whenever you are not home, and should spend all night in it. To me that is a little too confining, but it does work.

The dog should be walked at least once every 3-4 hours because of water intake as a puppy, and about one hour after feeding for the first 3 months of age, and within 2 hours till about 6 months of age, and within 3 hours till about a year.

Go out and get training treats if you like to use treats, they are bite sized and semi decent nutritionally. I just use praise, but every time your dog goes to the bathroom outside, praise the puppy, and if you like treat training, give the dog a treat. Every time the dog has an accident inside, chastise the dog and pull them over to the spot and put their nose up to it (not actually touching it) dogs surprisingly hate their own fecies more than you do. NEVER let your dog see you clean up the mess, then they feel that they have accomplished something in getting your attention. Put the dog out of sight, and clean with a vinegar solution. Most cleaning agents are ammonia based, as is urine so it leaves an ammonia smell that the animal will associate with urine and the puppy will have be more prone to have anomther accident in the same area; cleaning it just makes it so that the puppy can't tell he/she had an accident there, it just assumes another dog did and because it still smells, it is okay to go there.

Another important thing to remember is that dogs like to be outside, if you just take them out to go to the bathroom and then right back in they will learn to hold it outside so that they get more time outside, and may even refuse to go and go inside so that they can go backl out. Take the puppy for a walk and after they go walk a little while longer then go inside. It is more satisfying and rewarding to the dog, and provides more binding time.

Good Luck and remember, accidents will happen, but hard work will pay off.

Puppy pads just confuse pups. After EVERY meal, play time, snack, take her outside. A dog door really helps. If you have acces to another dog that dog may help train her. When you are gone use an expandable doggy door to keep her in a place where she had lots of toys, and can see outside if possible. You must take her outside pretty much every time you think about it and make a game out of going outside. Play ball or give her a treat AFTER she goes potty.
PLEASE IGNORE THE JERK WHO SAYS DOGS ARE DISGUSTING HE IS JUST BEING STUPID. AND HAS NEVER HAD LOVE FROM A DOG, Bet he has never loved a critter peroid!

I can't beleieve nobody else has said this, stop using puppy pads. Get rid of them and start taking her outside EVERY hour and after playing, eating and slepping. Pads in the house only let the puppy know it's alloed to go in the house, not where in the house it's supposed to go. Everytime you take her out use the SAME command such as go pee, and then give a treat outside and praise her when she goes. If she goes in the house, give the scruff of her neck a firm shake, but not hard, and take her outside and give her the command to go. She will then understand where she's supposed to go.

Be sure that her pad is not close to where she eats or sleeps. She will have a hard time going if it is close to any of those. Also try using the pads that have the grass smell, they go faster using those. Also, try praising her when she goes on the mat, she would know that you approve. Anyway, good luck.

leave the dog outside, if you think about it, a dog is a discusting animal to have in the house anway. How do you sanitize the house after the mess? do you go get all new flooring and sub flooring, or do you just mop it up a bit and continue to follow the 3 second rule for dropped food?

when she popies inside put her outside so she noses thats the place to go ..i sugest not using potty pads because thats like telling ur dog she can go inside on that pad....unless you dont have a yard for her to go into well if u dont then you need to tell her that it is bad when she gos popie on the floor and not on the pad then take her to the pad for her to know whats going on
