Why do we not compliment or thank each other more as a nation? We are all quick to put other people down instead of encouraging and helping each other. It's why we have schools and workplaces full of bullying and why people get depressed.

If we all made 3 compliments a day to each other it would benefit our society. Where instead all we do is pickon and taunt each other

Sign of the times, I'm afraid, brought on by a society that has become extremely materialistic and insulated from one another!
The breakdown in conventional family life and structure is now regarded as normality, especially in the UK. This trend is reflected in the breakdown of law and order in schools and on the street. The rule of 'survival of the fittest' has become recognised as the only way to survive, and anyone who falls by the wayside is an unfortunate statistic. Low standards of living for the elderly and some families is a disgrace in this rich Western society.
Yes, you're right, someone has to start the ball rolling, and create a new nation of more confident people, who are happier, because they're among friends.
No, this is not a build up to a religious answer. We must all begin to respect one another more as friends and neighbours and human beings. Maybe Yahoo Answers, with communication and friendship amongst many thousands of contributors, could be the starting point of a world wide change in attitude to the way we care about one another!! Bring it on!

I guess many people are insecure and putting others down makes them feel better. It's quite sad really. It just ends up being one big vicious circle aswell as somebody is mean to one person, who then takes their stress out on another by putting them down and so on and so forth.
I wish people could just be nicer to eachother too. It doesn't hurt to compliment someone or give them a smile, even if yu are thinking something horrible you should at least try to keep it to yourself.
There is this place called housing units and when you come down the stairs it has got a great little motto:
"If you see somebody without a smile, give them one of yours!"

people put others down to feel better about themselves. They think that insulting someone else makes them feel important and ahead of those they insult. also, people are very quick to blame on the whole and don't like to take responsibility/accountability for their actions. If you haven't noticed, people always take credit for the great things and blame others for the bad. Don't worry, I'm not like this, so there are some honest people still out there!

AGREED~!!!

I think people are lacking self respect today, so they forget to be respectful for others.
Today in a shop I was trying to find gift bags for an elderly friend. The blessed lady there spent a good ten minutes helping me describe the different bags to the lady on my wireless!!!
That is a NICE person! I thanked her twice.

I agree we should compliment each others good accomplishments.

There is a time and place for everything and it is not appropriate for the younger to correct the older.

It's human nature to criticise and put each other down. We're all insecure about certain things, and it shows.

Insecurity is why we put down each other. Self-confidence and self-esteem is really important. If we all had more self-confidence, this wouldn't be an issue.

Putting someone else down diverts the attention of our own insecurities - I just smile and avoid being drawn into it
