I would also mention to check for spyware/viruses.. using something like (for easily downloadable ness) spybot and AVG free antivirus...

Increasing your memory (if available as an option) and cleaning your registry (of listings of programs that have been uninstalled) should help as well

try to install xp again or clean some space on your hard disk.
