Yes this can be very unpleasant and I'm surprised that your family does not realize how rude this is. I would suggest that if you cannot avoid taking their calls that you try to move the phone away from your ear as much as possible to lessen the discomfort.
I must compliment you on being the one in your family to practice telephone etiquette.

I deal with the same situation all the time. I have an Uncle that sucks his teeth and smackes on candy all day. No one will tell him what he is doing and how anoying and rude it is. Im just happy to hear that someone out there is actually speaking up.
You know why they get affended right?............ Its because they know that they are wrong. Me myself; I just leave the room or get off of the phone and say call me back whenever your done.
The only time i cant get away is if im in the car with him and we're on the highway or something. I think that something sould be done and we should not stand for this.
anyway, GOOD LUCK.........oh, by the way, you can always try the same thing on them. Get a crunchy, juicy, piece of chicken and then call Smackers up; C
hewing and smacking all while acting like you dont know what your doing and see how they like it.

Hmm. can't say I've ever heard anyone do that. Maybe the volume on your phone is set too high?
BWAHAHA! I knew it was just a matter of time before someone MISTAKENLY accused you of spelling "aural" wrong. Pinheads!

Don't picture them eating on the phone. Think of them as licking the phone instead. Hope that helps!
It sounds like you'd rather hear them talk than eat!

I hate that oral abuse, and I won't put up with it. I tell them to stop, and if they don't, I hang up.
