A previous answerer "Emmy" said it best. Arabic has classic form "what you call pure" and the colloquial Arabic; which is spoken by the people.
Do you want my honest advice ? If you want to focus on the Classical Arabic, then you should read read read and read. We, Egyptians, don't speak Classical Arabic , and we don't know how to speak it. This is the same for all Arab countries, you will find that all of these countries speak their own dialect and not the classical one.
It's a good thing if you learn the Egyptian dialect though. It will help you to learn the Classical Arabic . It's never a bad thing to learn Egyptian dialect.
Good Luck and contact me if you need any information or help.

Well,as all languages ,Arabic has both the "colloquial" and also "classical" .The one people are speaking in ,is Colloquial of course .So don't be up set I think your Arabic is quite good ,you only need to practice it .
Look,I think you are studying medicine? so if you got better in colloquial that would make it easier for you to understand lectures.
In this case I recommend books .Part of my major is teaching Arabic as a foreign language .If you would like to know some books' names such as "kullu tamaam or ahlan w sahlan"
you can contact me at my e-mail " emmyeg_us@hotmail.com " and I'll send you some useful materials.for now try these sites:

"for pronunciation"
http://mec.sas.upenn.edu/marhaba/lesson_...
http://i-cias.com/babel/arabic/index.htm... (this one with audio option)
"for writing"
http://afl.ajeeb.com/freetour/menu/menu....

But to be honest with you you'd better practice it with native speakers as much as possible to get the dialect.

Good luck
