I have .avi video files that I want to make GIFs with but when I open it with the Animator it says that it doesn't work. I don't understand why, because it is supposed to read .avi files.
What did I do wrong? Does it need to be decompressed? (if so, where can I find a free decompressor online?)

You are probably missing the codec for the type of compression the AVI in question is using.
Go to this site:
http://avicodec.duby.info/
Download avicodec and it will tell you what codec you need and hopefully where to get it.

The .avi may be corrupt, or not compatable.
Have you tried other avi,s that do work?
