If the lot # on the top starts with 2111 then throw them out. Those were the lots that were affected. Salmonela can live in refrigerated climates. I watched a "Mystery Diagnosis" where quite a few people from different states got really sick with salmonella after eating ice cream that was made from eggs that were tained.

It is recommended on the label that you refrigerate after opening, however this makes the peanut butter hard. There is no harm in storing in a cool, dry cupboard if you like it soft. The recall has to do with the affected peanuts prior to manufacture; it has nothing to do with the storage.

Peanut butter doesn't spoil so you can keep it on a shelf in the kitchen or the fridge if you prefer. I'm sure the the peanut butter that was reacalled was contaminated before/during the process of putting it in the jar.

There's no need to refrigerate peanut butter after opening it so you can place it in the pantry/cupboard.
I like mine in the fridge just because I like the taste of cold peanut butter not room temperature. But it is harder to spread on the bread if you keep it in the fridge.

We keep our in the fridge because we use the natural kind and I don't like that rancid flavor nuts can get. Seriously, if you have the Peter Pan, you should just toss it in the garbage. Not worth the risk.

I'm not sure it's necessary to keep it in the fridge, but I always have. It just makes me feel like it stays fresher that way. I haven't heard anything about the recall though. Maybe it is just that brand. We use "Skippy Natural". You haven't heard anything like it about that brand have you? I would love to know. Anyway I hope your family will be OK. Good luck!

My grandmother and mother before me stored there's in a kitchen cabinet so I do as well. IT never occurred to me to put it in the fridge. It's on the same shelf the ketchup is on.
