The Isle of Wight is part of the UK so no passport is necessary. You won't need any form of ID at all in fact.
If you were to take the ferry from Southampton to France or somewhere else that's a separate country, then you would need your passport.
You should check out the British Passport site:
http://www.passport.gov.uk/ to find out how to apply for a new passport for your baby and renew your son's one for when you do travel abroad.

oh god, hope you didn't pay too much for your ferry crossing as it's a no go without passport AND an I.O.W visa. best check with the relevant embassy to see if you have time to submit the necessary D.N.A samples for yourselves and your kids.
