Well the LDS church has only been around for about 200 years...it seems common in human history for people to call such "new" religions cults.
I am LDS, and personally, I don't care if they call it a cult, they just mean a religion different from their own, and I'm totally fine with that, I know it's different, it's no big deal to me.
edit - wow! it's incredible how many misunderstandings and bitterness is out there about my faith...I wonder where that all comes from.

Primarily Christians view Mormons as a cult because the entire Religion is based on the"Prophet" Joe Smith. A lot of his teachings are contrary to the teachings of the Bible, so,
he wrote his own little Book after the Bible,
this book is the NEW real word of God according to Mormons
remember the bible says in the last verses
Anyone that adds to or takes away from the Bible will be condemned

i trust the time period cult grow to be made favourite some a number of years in the past. possibly presently after Joseph Smith prepared the LDS Church. a collection of Orthodox Christians set forth the commonplace skills for a cult, to exclude basically particular church homes, which they determined were no longer Christian. yet they did not be conscious that in accordance to their regulations for figuring out cults, the Church which Jesus prepared in the hot testomony also qualifies as a Cult! i assume they nonetheless do no longer understand. They call Mormons a cult for dissimilar causes, besides the undeniable fact that it would not count number, because we do not prefer to be known as Christian with the help of their definition. we are Christian through the Lord's definition, found in Acts 2;37,38. and we are the in trouble-free terms Church on earth that may make this declare. because we've each and each and every of the skills which the Apostles of previous set forth, as taught through the Savior Jesus Christ. So if the Protestant Christians needs to imagine people as a cult, through all means bypass for it...whew6

Some so-called "Christians" regard anything outside their right-wing fundamentalism as "un-Christan"--and there's nothing you can do with such bigots except ignore them.
Some Christians, like myself, respect the Mormans--its their religion and should be not merely tolerated but respected as their choice. But, given that they rely on a non-Christian scripture, I don't regard them as Christian--any more than a Jew, Muslim, or Hindu is a Christian. That's not pejorative--its simply that the Mormon faith doesn't fit the definition. But the Mormons are not a cult, by any means. In fact, the right-wing sects I referred to more closely resemble cults than do the Mormons.

The term cult is often misused. A cult is a religion that is said to be unorthodox or that emphasizes devotion according to prescribed ritual. Many cults follow a living human leader, and often their adherents live in groups apart from the rest of society. The standard for what is orthodox, however, should be God’s Word the Bible. Their worship is a way of life, not a ritual devotion. They neither follow a human nor isolate themselves from the rest of society. They live and work in the midst of other people. Thier more of a false religion than a cult.

There are basic points of fellowship between denomonations, meaning there are basic things you must believe to be considered "Christian". The LDS do not meet these points.
It isn't anything fancy.
Do you believe the Bible is complete and the infailible word of God
Do you believe in the Trinity - God in three persons seperate, and united
Jesus, the only son of God, was born of a virgin lived a blameless life, was crucified in our place, rose from the grave on the third day and will return again
The Mormons fail on all three points.
To go further into it, the founder of the religion was much like the L. Ron Hubbard of his day. He wrote a book, tried to pass it off as truth and they have been leading people astray ever since.
I suggest you look deep into the history of the LDS.
Your friend needs prayer.

Because it is a cult. The Book of Mormon, supposedly given to Joseph Smith by God, who was a known con artist, was something Smith made up in order to justify him having multiple wives. An early leader, Brigham Young, was also a notorious con artist.
The Modern Day LDS "Church" does have some outstanding social principles we all could go by. Unfortunately, the whole thing is based upon a fraud.
Although the multiple wives practice has "officially" been banned by the Mormon church, there are still factions that practice this, in many cases older men "marrying" young female children, leading to rampant statutory rape and pedophilia.

In spite of their avowals otherwise, the LDS do NOT see Christ the way Christians see Him. To them, He is merely a human who made good and became a god. It is central to their belief system that ANY male who strictly and strenuously follows their tenets and practices will someday become a god just like Jesus and have their own worlds to create and play with.
And that last is why they are considered a cult. A belief system which so twists the message of another belief system and then continues to call itself by the same name as the original belief system is ipso facto, a cult, or offshoot, of the original system.

Because Mormons follow the Book of Mormon. Most Christians believe that after God sent His Son to us, why would He need to send us a lesser prophet (aka Joseph Smith). Also, Mormons believe that by being good Mormons they can attain the status of God over their own universe. Isn't wanting to be "like God" what caused Satan's downfall? I had a discussion with a Mormon once and all he could talk about was where Joesph Smith was killed and where this temple was and what the Mormons did here and there. He never once mentioned God or Christ; it was all Mormonism.

1) Because they are not "other Christians". They ARE a non-Christian cult.
2) Historically, only until recently have Mormons wanted to be called Christians, preferring not to be included with Christian denominations, which Joseph Smith said were, "all wrong ... all their creeds were an admonition in his sight, and that those professors (Christians) were all corrupt" (Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith, 2:18-19).
3) They preach exactly what St. Paul warned the Church about a "different gospel" and "another Jesus". It is not the Gospel of Holy Scripture and it is not Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Most Holy and Blessed Trinity.
