i was on prozac for about 3 years then went onto citrilopram for about 4 years, now i am t total, i don't feel like hurting myself or anything, i just don't really have a laugh, or get excited, i do somtimes laugh like at a joke but then i'm just back to normal not really thinking much, i have a permanent frown it actually takes effort to smile sometimes like when i'm at work. i work with people and i have to put on a smile and pretend like i'm a happy normal person.

Most of the problem is due to the fact that you took and are taking powerful dangerous drugs that cause problems with brain chemistry.
Certain people have lower endoprhins than others, and there are very easy ways to increase endorphin levels. Before giving you drugs, did any doctor ask you about your diet? I doubt it. If you eat a lot of sugary foods, carbs, bread, pasta, juice, sweets, etc. you create imbalances in your body/mind. It's a way of trying to self-medicate. This is why you got mood swings.
These are symptoms of low endoprhins:
• Feeling tearful, isolated, depressed, and hopeless
• Having low self-esteem
• Feeling that other people take advantage of you
• Having a low tolerance for pain (emotional and physical)
• Feeling emotionally overwhelmed
• Craving sweets
The Prozac increases your serotonin, which makes you feel somewhat calm, but you never got to the root of the problem, (low endorphins) which is why you don't feel happy.
You can try to up your endorphins simply by doing pleasant activities http://www.recoverfromdepression.com/betaendorphins.htm
But you probably need a total diet overhaul to up your endorphins, seortonin and balance your blood sugar. It's not rocket science, it just takes some time to get all three in balance. Once you do, you'll feel happy, calm, energetic, positive, and live without drugs.
Take care.

It may be that your condition has nothing to do with being clinically depressed. Somebody that I know very well had been treated for depression since she was 13. She had also been 'diagnosed' with myalgic encephalomylitis (M.E.) and had been 'treated' for htis. The net result of all of this was that she was cycling through different medications as she became impervious to their effects after a while, and the doses went up. She is now 34. I spent some time with her and whilst she was asleep I noticed (frighteningly) that her breathing kept stopping. She had always been known to snore but nobody knew that she wasn't breathing properly. Sometimes she would not take a breath for 30 seconds or so, and would awake with a start. Within a couple of seconds she would be falling into a sleep again. In the morning she had no recollection of waking up at all during the night. She managed to get a sleep study carried out, at the request of her G.P. This proved that she did have sleep apnoea (stopping breathing whilst sleeping). The result of this condition is that the sufferer spends the day very tired, some days are fine because the disorder varies greatly from day to day. She now uses a CPAP machine, which keeps her airway pressurised overnight, and she now gets adecent night's sleep every nght. She has no depression at all and is not taking any medication.

Sounds like very low seretonin. You should go back to your doctor and get some different meds. It takes a while to dial in the right medication and dosage. Don't give up! You will wonder why you let yourself suffer so long once your meds are right.

your state is caused by your surroundings, which only you or other human beings in it can change, meds are to help you deal with whatever situation you are in without killing yourself, which is proof on its own that it will get better because otherwise why would they make things to help you get through it? also thinking about it many drugs are harmful to a developing brain, which yours will be at your age and as such you may be sensitive to the drugs you mentioned, hence you get weaker or less effective stuff. double edit now, as you said the things in your life wont go away, and the harder stuff you take might mak things seem better but the problems still their and you would eventualy have to stop taking them to avoid addiction, and so its best to just man up and face your issues with a big **** you written on your chest...pretty much what i did with my alcoholic mother, i have wanted to kill myself plenty of times, but sadness, fear and anxiety turn to hatred after a while, which is a lot more fun and a brilliant fuel for arrogance.

Head injuries or drinking can shut down the part that releases them, which leads to depression. Not crapella, my friend had this problem and had brain surgery.

mAY BE YOU ARE EXPECTING TOO MUCH. hOWEVER, THE BEST WAY TO BOOST YOUR ENDORPHIN LEVELS ARE BY EXERCISE. THE GYM OR JOGGING THREE TIMES a week should do it.
