honesty...ALWAYS!!!

Being truthful is always the best way to go, as long as it is done delicately and carefully, taking into consideration the other person's feelings, while showing appreciation of the person you are telling the truth to, and letting that person know that he or she means a lot to you. and always will..(if you still care about the person.)
If a mistake has been made to dishonor the person by betrayal, or something close to it,the truth should be told, and you should take responsibility for your actions, and the effects it has on the other person. You can always ask for forgiveness, and show that you are really sorry. Otherwise, you end up suffering from a guilty conscience, lower self-esteem, etc., and there is always the possibility that the other person can either sense something, or actually find out.
Practicing honesty and truthfulness will always give the relationship a better leverage for future discussions, and mutual respect under any and all circumstances, and makes you a better person, as long as you are not attacking, or denigrating that other person. Hiding the truth doesn't serve you or the other person.

Lying is never the answer. What if they learn the truth sometime down the road? The person who's been wronged will not only be hurt, feeling like a fool, and hating you for lying.

Things that are hidden almost always come out eventually, and then the consequences tend to be worse.

Best to lay it on the table and see where it goes than try to hide something....otherwise when it comes out not only will your loved one be hurt about that issue, but also hurt that you hid it from them...

...besides, you are assuming what you want to hide would be hurtful to them...perhaps it would not...people don't always react to things as we expect. Let him/her decide what to think about it.

honesty hurts less in the long run. the truth comes eventually and will be far more painful if it was lied about or covered up.

Honesty is very important, but do it with kindness. Sometimes softening the brutal truth is necessary.

it really depends on the situation...if it's something really serious, you'd better be completely honest, but if it's something stupid, like "do I look fat?", it's usually okay to lie and not hurt their feelings.
