I have a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice, and over 10 years experience in Finance. I'm having trouble finding a job in the criminal justice field because I don't want to be a police officer and I don't want to be a corrections officer. Any suggestions? I'm starting to feel like I'll be miserable the rest of my life if I continue to stay in Finance and not pursue my real dream of pursuing what I went to school for!!

I want to be a crime scene investigator or something like that, but most departments require that you become a cop first. I'm really discouraged.

- MOST IMPORTANTLY -
YOU DON'T NEED TO BE A POLICE OFFICER OR CORRECTIONS OFFICER TO GET WHERE YOU WANT TO BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best thing to do is look on the website for your local force, they keep updates of jobs for police support staff, so this will help you get into the right area.
From there many more jobs are advertised internally and it is easier to move around once you have your foot in the door! Scene of Crime Officer jobs are highly sort after so don't give up! A qualification in photography or at least an intrest in that area will always help you if you get the chance to apply for that job!
I did a degree in Criminology and have been working as a civillian for the police for a year and a half, its very intresting and lots of opportunities to move round into different areas so keep your eyes peeled and ears open, so don't give up and GOOD LUCK!

you could always work with children, such as troubled youth. There is the dept of probation or parole. If you are interested (I was looking at your finance record), you could start your own security or investigation firm. You could always transfer your college credits and go for your law degree, or become a judge. There are several things you can do. I hope you find the right one, as I know how hard it is to figure out what to do with your degree. I have a Bus. Admin degree and I hate people :(.....good luck.

what do you want to be?
what did you want to be when you chose criminal justice?
so, just because it's required that you become a cop first - you are not going to make your dream come true? are you that lazy? nothing is ever easy and if you want to be a professional - you will have to work hard and there are always going to be things that you won't like, that will discourage you and if you let that stop you from fulfilling your dream - then you are not worth it
and be very certain about what you want to be, always remember this thing "I've always wanted to become someone, I guess I should of been more specific"

What exactly did you go to school for? If you don't want to work in the criminal justice areas, why did you study that paticular course? I think the only option would be that you could work in investigation areas. You could probably work with social services as well.

How about becoming a Crime Scene Photographer first, then move into investigations? Take a college level Photography class.

if you didn't want to start out in police or corrections, then what do you mean what you went to school for....i guess you could try being a parole officer or halfway house overseer or private eye or something.
or somewhere in the court system. you need to identify all the possible jobs in criminal justice.system so you can find one you would like.

Not sure where you went to school to get this degree but with most schools you are able to go back and talk to the career guidance counselor about this. If this was a business school you went to, they usually offer lifetime job placement opportunity.

You must go to law school. However if you are not a top notch law student you could end up poor and unhappy anyway.
