Either way. If someone can't handle going to war, then by golly, don't enlist. Once you enlist you serve your Country. Going AWOL is a treasonous act and treason should be punished by death. As a matter of fact there are a lot of treasonous liberal politicians. Oh look at Sandy Burgler!! What he did was a disgrace and he got a slap on the wrist and if a dem gets into office, he could have access to secure information again. What a DISGRACE some people are to a great Country and a stab in the back to our brave men and women that have the guts to SERVE our Country and give these morons the freedom to commit these treasonous acts. Their so called freedom of speech goes too far, they do it without even thinking of the consequences.

Just have to say shame on those that are criticizing you or insulting you. Their lame as*ses are sitting right behind a computer with nothing under their belt to serve their Country. I haven't served, but I do what I can as a Citizen of this Country. I support all of our troops whether anyone has served in any war. Why? It takes GUTS and it shows how much all of you that do, love this Country and do what is needed.

God bless you for serving and bless all of our veterans, pow's and our troops today that are in harms way.

I am ex Australian navy, I was in the Persian Gulf the day the war started in 1991, as far I am aware, no-one on active duty from our forces went AWOL, I'm certain that if they did, the people they deserted would have wanted to kill them, and yes, I do think the death penalty should be enforced for desertion in war time.

John, you are so right on. These guys thought they could play soldier and never do anything but polish their guns one weekend a month and now they are called on to do what we have been paying them to do for years. They signed up to be soldiers so be one and quit whining. My best friend's neigbor just got a bullet thru the neck and left a wife and two kids. Now, let's talk about the $500,000.00 she is getting from the Federal Govt. The state of Kansas gave $ 250,000.00 on top of that to the first few who were killed but it was breaking the budget and they have stopped it. This widow wrote a scathing letter to the editor in our state capital newspaper about how unfair it was not to give that state money to her as her husband earned it. This entitlement mentality is unbelievable. I'm terribly sorry that he was killed and sorry that he won't be here to raise his two kids but he should have thought about it when he signed on. I'll bet you anything when he joined there was not a word about $750,000.00 in his contract. And you are so right. If he is some kid who got drunk and joined up and got scared to death, I might have some compassion but a Captain who bales out on the men under him? Shoot him and give the rest of them something to think about. My husband and brother were in Nam at the same time so I do understand how hard it is but they were forced to go by the draft. That Captain said, "Hey, I want to be a soldier." No one twisted his arm. Give him what we've always given a deserter.

This not a decision to be made lightly by anyone. If he needs out he needs out. Why do you macho, women abusing beasts always want to kill? Did you sign in the hopes you could kill another human being?

The people with the most guts go into countries you like to over run and help at the grass roots level.

Vietnam Army combat veteran (11B) myself. Each person makes decisions based upon conscience. Personally, I think killing someone for making a choice like this is wrong. In other circumstances, such as desertion of your buddies under fire.....not so quick to forgive the same individual; but, would want him out of my sight.

He ran away and left his men and his worst punishment is that he will be known by all men as a coward for the rest of his life. Don't kill him, make him live with his shame.
By the way, I'm ex-Air Force, Viet Nam era. My contribution to the war was running a sewing machine making seat covers for planes and helicopters. That's why I tell my kids I was a Coast Guard lawyer. It sounds better.
I would like to thank you and your buddy for helping to defend our country.

No matter what, the government should never set the example that murder is OK.
And that's what cap pun is- MURDER!
And the murder rate on the street has been statistically shown to go up 8% foir two weeks after a death penalty in the area in which it is publicized.
Now, ask me if I did the statistics and if I believe that numbers never lie. I'll tell you no, but do you think I want my son to be one of the potential 8%?
Hey, I'll err onthe side of caution on this one. And sit out the ultra-expensive jury selection,
and the financial reviews of the State while I'm at it, thank you.

There is no ex in Marine, this Captain should hang I'm not sure if this Captain was a marine or not but if he was I'm surprised he still exist, his actions might have caused the death directly or indirectly of men under his charge I cannot think of a better definition of treason than this.

Actually, I am unaware of a change in the UCMJ that prohibits the death penalty in a time of war for desertion or dereliction of duty.

i think the law of shooting is very antiquated.i as you have been under fire in war,as you and i know it is extremely scary.i was fearful for my life.but as you did and i did we survived.we all have a breaking point and this officer had his.there is no excuse for running away from battle.im sure this man suffers from ptsd as i do.he cracked its as simple as that.he needs to be court marshalled and jailed, also councilling.it not like he massacred innocent people as happened in vietnam.he has his conscious to remind him for the rest of his life.he will never forget
