its known as a 'two end bag' it is primarily used to create better timing when punching and moving around a target...it is superior to most bags used in training because when hit, its movement is not restricted in movement area...like a speedbag...

The Double end bag was one of my favorite bags to practice on when I was fighting, you use it for timing and slipping. You really don't want to wind up a crack this bag as hard as you can, there wouldn't be any benefit it doing that instead you want to work on snapping your punches and throwing fast combinations on a bag that is meant to simulate your opponents head.

There's also the Double double end bag, this bag is meant to simulate your opponents head and body. You work this bag the same as above but you add in body shots. I have to be honest with you, this bag really doesn't do too much for you in my opinion, if anyones body moved that fast along with their head there would be something majorly wrong with that individual.

Good luck to you and I hope that my answer helped.

firstly id say don't try and punch to fast like a maniac, get your self into a rhythm 1-2,1-2,1-2, try to hit the ball in the centre so it doesn't head off in other directions, watch it closely and move around in a circular motion, once you get the rhythm of the ball you can start to vary your punches double jab left hook, left right upper-cut ,etc
the floor to ceiling ball takes some practice and perseverance but once you master it its great for hand eye co-ordination and hitting that target that doesn't want to be hit (like your opponent head)
good luck and practice heaps.

Santana beat me to it.
When you get really good at it and you have a trainer that shows you the proper footwork he can teach you how to step around the bag, on balance, and throw hooks/3,4 or 5 punch combinations at it. Sometimes if I'm gassed or if I want to work on a particular combination; I'll throw an uppercut at the bag to "reset" it and throw the combination I want to work on.
