I have a male and a female cockatiel. The female has been sitting on eggs and I just now found out that one hatched. I used to have two females, the one the male mated with layed eggs and hatched one. The baby grew up healthy but flew out the back door last summer. The mother had been in her nest for a few days and about a week before the baby got out she died. I don't know why. I don't want the same thing happening to the new mother. Anyone know why the first mother died? What should I do for new Mom?

Like all females, female birds have the tougher job in reproduction. You should talk to a vet about breeding, it is not easy to say at this point why the mother died, but some possibilities:

Egg binding ..eggs get caught in the body of the mother.
Dietary deficiencies: calcium in particular if your bird is laying lots of eggs. You might want to "try" (though it might be impossible) and prevent egg laying if it's constant. Cuttle bones and vitamins can help
If she dosen't leave the nest, check to make sure that her mate is doing his job..feeding her and that she gets everything she needs.
Make sure she's warm enough.
There are lots of dietary supplements at the pet store, talk to them and your vet.

I am so sorry for your loss. Birds die from many causes from viruses, egg binding, heart problems or other metabolic reasons. Bad things happen to good people.Perhaps a good diet that will help build up the immune system may help. I use a good pellet food like Roudybush, Zupreem, Harrison's, limit seeds to 10%, and add 10-20% fruits and veggies. For mating birds I add chopped hard cooked egg with crumbled shell for the extra protein, calcium and other nutrients in an effort to create healthy parents and offspring.I hope things go very well and your birds live a happy long life.

Unless you could have taken her to a Vet and have a necropsy done there is no for sure answer as to why the bird died, it could have any anything that caused her death including being natural causes.

There is never a guarentee how long anyone's bird will live.
