which music software is best?

Reason, Fruity Loops, Logic Pro, Ableton Live etc.
What are the differant ones good for and what are they not good for? Like, if you were after "so and so" in a program what should you buy?

My friend is a composer and he prefers Logic Pro but I know a lot of people doing studio work that like Pro Tools.
