I have two Yorkies - one with very long naturally silky hair, and another with a long thick coat like rug wool! Sorry to hear you're having problems with 'dreads' and tangles. If you cannot just snip away the knotted parts, take your Yorkie to a professional groomer. Once the tangles are gone, you should try and adopt a twice daily regime of combing as well as brushing. Yorkies can get used to this at a very early age; mine always have. I find that brushing is not enough to really keep the coat free of knots and tangles. If you are able to manage combing, do this very gently holding the coat near the skin in your hand; by doing this, you will not pull the hair. In future, a good conditioner after shampooing always helps.
In my opinion, a Yorkie's coat should never be cut. Nature has provided for a very good reason. So many Yorkies are stripped like shorthairs and, even in summer, this does them no favours. See how you go once the knots are removed and PLEASE persevere with the grooming regime. Visit my 360 page and see my two 'boys'. Best of luck!

When I first got my pom she was one big knot! I used a slicker brush along with No More Tangles. Sometimes the knots were so bad that nothing worked and I had to cut them out.
Once you get her all detangled, keep her brushed 2-3 times a week.

Take her to a groomer. If it is possible to brush her out, they will do it. If they say it can't be done and she needs to be shaved, then have that done and start over. Most groomers will be willing to show you proper brushing technique so that you can keep the coat in better shape.

i don't know about yorkies, but i have a Pomeranian with very long tangly hair. i don't brush her out on the same day i bathe her. the next day, when her hair is completely dry, she will let me brush her with a nylon bristled brush. i first brush her undercoat by brushing upward and opposite of it's regular growing direction. it removes the tangles underneath first, then it's easier to brush in a normal fashion.

Congrats on your new Yorkie. I truthfully have 2 of them. A brother & sister that are 6 years previous. they are large little canines, and are very exciting. make certain you utilize a harness, and not a collar. Their little necks are no longer large adequate or good adequate to positioned on a collar. Please do no longer gown your dogs up. they are canines no longer little ones. If it gets chilly the place you reside, you are able to positioned a sweater on for walks. we've a pool, and mine hate swimming. One is a quite sturdy swimmer, and the different one would probable final 2 minutes in the previous she drowned.

Take her to a groomer. They have ways of handling the dog so they are comfortable. After that is done, make sure and brush her out everyday so it doesn't happen again.

I would take her to the groomers... its much easier, specially if u have a dog that don't like to be brushed or sit still long enough for u to bathe her and brush her... let professionals handle it... Good luck
