If I was going to pick between a Bull Terrier and a Pit Bull, I would choose a Bull Terrier, one of my reasons is because they are not so mainstream, I mean everyone has a pit bull. Bull terriers are cool dogs and you are more apt to find a nice bull terrier probably more so than a pit without having to look so hard simply because pits are sometimes over-bred and there are alot of bad pit breeders out there (but bull terriers are becoming popular though, so watch out). But also But pit bulls are nice dogs also if you get them from a reputable breeder..........it's like the bad apples spoil the whole bunch, just because you want or own a pit certainly does not mean that you are "trash" or a "lowlife". Those who responsibly own pits are just as good as someone who owns Labs or Goldens. Let's not generalize.

The BBC news item below tells how a Pit Bull terrier savagely attacked a 5 year old girl and killed her (1 month ago). The dog was owned by the little girl's uncle.
These dogs are banned in the UK under the Dangerous Dogs act of 1991. The Pit Bull is the FIRST dog to be specifically identified under this law and it is an offence to breed them or to sell them. The clear intention of the law is to rid the UK of all Pit Bull Terriers.
Enough said....I hope. Get yourself a nice friendly dog. There are plenty to choose from.

The decision is up to you, but I will say that those people telling you that pitbulls are aggressive and will attack strangers or whatever the case may be, clearly know nothing of the breed. While pitbulls can Become aggressive, they are not born aggressive. The aggression comes from lack of proper training, lack of proper exercise and lack of a proper authority figure. I, myself, have a two year old pitbull and she is the most adorable and loving creature known to me. I also have a male beagle and two cats, all of which she gets along with very well. I know for a fact that she would never hurt a single thing on this planet, and the reason I'm so confident in that is because I'm confident in my training of her and she knows better than to do anything without my either leading the way or my telling her to do it. Don't let people scare you away from owning a pitbull just because of the reputation they have. Their reputations are fully based on the fact that people lack the skills and knowledge to train them properly, and lack the time, energy or will to exercise them as needed. Pitbulls have a lot of energy, and if that energy isn't expelled through daily walks and/or runs, they will take that energy and turn it into negative behaviors, and because they were bred as fighting dogs, naturally, the first behavior they choose to expell that access energy into is aggression. If you can be a strong leader, then you will have a hard time finding a more loving companion than a pitbull.

I love pit bulls but everyone is trying to talk me out of getting one because of their reputation and the liability. My apartment complex will not even rent to pit bull owners. I am thinking about a mix.... Staffordshire terriers have about the same look, but not many bad things said about them. I saw one mixed with a pit and it was an awesome looking dog! Whatever the case, please consider a rescue. There are so many loving pups out there that need homes and already come housebroken, spayed/neutered, and trained.

Might I suggest a pit bull mix? I have a shar-pei staffordshire terrier mix and he is wonderful. He is loyal, smart, easily house broken, protective but not to a fault and he is gorgeous he looks like a shar-pei but he is brindle all over. What ever you get be prepared Pit bulls stay puppy like for a long time and it is a lot of work getting them trained also be prepared for dog training it is a necessity with all terriers.........

Be careful; since Target started using an English Bull Terrier for their Spokes"Man" a lot of people are breeding them. Go to a reputable breeder so you don't get a puppy mill nightmare.
I adore the miniature ones-easy to take care of- they are muscular so in their old age they can get arthritis- no long coats to maintain-they are the clowns of the dog world. An English Bull Terrier won Westminster his name was Rufus-he kissed the judge.

It depends on how much you are willing to put up with. It's a hard job having to tell people that no you're pit bull won't "eat them" everytime you take it into public. It can really get upseting, especially when you know that your own pit bull is too afraid of a mouse (he jumped on the couch and whimpered for an hour) to even think about hurting anything. I love my pit bull to death, he is my best friend, but I don't like recommending them to people because I would hate for a dog to end up in the hands of someone who won't take good care of it and treat it right so that it's not another negative media story that makes is harder for me and my dog.

Hmmm ..listening to all these posts, an aquataince of mine was bought a 2 year old puppy terrier for her birthday from her daughter. Puppies are cute. She had this dog for 2 years , puppy classes, training, big house and garden and the whole love of the family. and here we go ...ONE day this young dog ...who had (a very decent upbringing) decided that the Yorkshire terrior on a old womans lap, in the park ..was dinner or plaything !. Out of the blue ..this dog went loopy and savaged the yorkie in front of both owners !! Why ? Its interbred ? what breed? pit bull ? upbringing ? YES all of them... Shocked us all ...sad story but a serious one and not unusual .

Do you mean an English Bulldog? It's hard to recommend a dog without knowing any of your circumstances. Do you have kids? How much space does your home have? Do you want a dog that needs a lot or minimal exercise? Go to Purina's website and use the breed selector. You can answer the questions about your preferences and expectations and it will help you choose a dog.
