They don't seem to sell them in pet stores. And i rather not take in an abandoned cat....thats like going to a homless shelter and telling someone they can sleep in your spare room.

There's really no need to buy a cat unless you're looking for a purebred animal to breed or show. There are countless shelters with millions of animals waiting for homes. These cats will have all been examined by a vet, be given all their shots and be spayed and/or neutered before they are allowed to be taken to their new homes, so you don't have to worry about your new pet having any diseases. Many people also advertise animals for sale and for free in newspapers or on websites like Craigslist.org.

If you want a purebred animal, but have no intention on breeding or showing your cat, then check into purebred animal rescue groups. You can find their listings on the internet and find the group that's closest to you. (Use a search engine like Dogpile, Google, or Yahoo! and search by breed.)

One more word on abandoned cats: Many times animals that are abandoned have done nothing wrong or have nothing wrong with them. They were simply abandoned by heartless owners who no longer felt like taking care of them. People often don't want to accept that animal adoption is a lifetime commitment (the lifetime of their pet, that is) and when they get tired of taking care of it, they simply throw it out. It's cruel, inhuman, and in many places, illegal, though it's rarely ever prosecuted. So please don't think an abandoned animal is unworthy of your love and companionship.

Well, since you don't have to worry about a cat robbing you (I'm imagining you would be worried about things along that line), it's hardly the same thing.

Animal shelters have many cats for adoption. They are all checked by a vet to make sure they are healthy. Most also watch the cats' behavior closely and will let you know if there are any issues a cat may have. If you don't want to deal with the issues, don't adopt the cat. No shelter will knowingly adopt out an aggressive cat, so that shouldn't be one of the issues.

If you want to purchase a purebred kitten, you need to find a reputable breeder. The websites for the Cat Fanciers Association and TICA (I believe it's The International Cat Association) should have more info on finding a breeder.

Where I come from, you never need to buy a cat. I lived out in the country and people were always dumping them along the road. It's sad. Go to an animal shelter and adopt a kitten! I guarantee they are overwhelmed with kittens that need loving homes. I don't know what your issues are with abandoned cats. Find your local animal shelter. There are plenty of kittens there.

How you equate having an abandoned cat with a homeless person is beyond me.Are you an idiot. Some of the best pets are the abandoned type. If you cannot bring yourself to give a home to a stray then go to your local SPCA or animal shelter.

If you don't want an abandoned cat you should go to petsmart, but you should really consider going and at least looking around in a shelter. Cats die everyday because people like you don't want cats that have been abandoned.

Good luck finding a kitty!

Oh and by the way once you get your cat have it fixed cause we don't want even more kittens to be born homeless.

Why would anyone want to buy a cat when there is a lot of abandoned ones that people drop? What about those ones? They need homes aswell. There is nothing wrong with stray cats all you have to do is take them to a vet and have a vet check them out to make sure they are ok and get their shots. They are just as loving as the ones that you buy. I haven't heard of anywhere you could buy them at. All of ours came from families and some people who were giving them away outside of wal-mart one day.

It's not fair to compare shelters for homeless cats to shelters for homeless people!

If you adopt a cat from a shelter or humane society, you're not just getting a feline companion, you're saving a life. Pay a visit to a shelter so you and a cat can pick each other out.

You couldnt be more misled.
I work at the pound, and rescued cats are the most loyal and loving... they want out of those cages, and have tons of love to give.
It is more like bailing them out of jail.... I have 4, all rescues, and they are my hearts content... please, don't shop- adopt.
They need a home, and will love you for it. Buying a pet when the pounds are full of animals who want a warm bed, some love and some nice food is just wrong.....
Be gentle, save your money, and give a cat facing death, for no crime at all, a safe home.
love, L

i agree with the rest of the forum! all six of my house cats are rescues in form or another.
Ivy was doomed to be drowned, all her other siblings found homes, she was past the "cute" stage. she's one of the most loving maine coon crosses ever!
lucky was a kitten found on the road eating a dead raccoon. her mom got hit by a car. she was only 3 weeks old when my husband found her. she's now 15 yrs/o!
Zane was also due to be drowned, a litter of barn cats no one wanted. her two siblings went to a home with tons of kids to love them and we kept her. she's our "greeter" cat! she chirps and trills to anyone that walks in the door!
Khali Moon was out of a feral litter. she's a silver blue, siamese type markings, with long hair and blue eyes, w/o a tail. her bobtail grew side ways so she has"poo" issues. no one would adopt her because of that. she is now out grown that for the most part and is very happy!
Khalis brother was timid, no one wanted a timid kitten. know he thinks he's "king"!
From the last litter of feral kittens i found homes for, Dragon, he's a 15# monster now. but he was a timid kitten, not so playful. no one wanted him! now he parties like a "normal" kitten!
i just find a rescued pet to be more "grateful" and loyal!
also bear in mind there are breed specific rescues for cats and dogs. quite often these are animals that didn't measure up to show standards! they would make great companion animals, most of the time you are to sterlize them, you should anyway. contact breeders and ask you local vets for more info!
give that a go!

Go to an animal shelter. They're always looking for someone to adopt. You'll save an animal from being put down!
