You may want to confine your kitten to a kitten-proof room until you get him trained. I've never had excess trouble with kittens damaging the house though, except for dragging toilet paper all over the place.

It really depends on the age of the kitten. You need to know if your kitten will "eat" inappropriate - chew wires, stuff from the floor etc.
I think it's better to have a kitten in a small space though it will be inclined to sleep a lot and be more rambunctious when you come home.
For optimum social and emotional development a kitten should have another kitten for companionship. I hope you can consider this.

Kittens are very curious. You are better off leaving the kitten in a closed room with plenty of kitty toys so it does not get bored. If the kitten has access to a house it will take full advantage and get into trouble. For its own safety, give him his own room...

I would put him in one room if possible. But even then you have to "baby proof" the room. Unplug all cords so he doesn't chew on them and get shocked. Then set them up out of the way so he doesn't pull on them and knock something over. If he pulls on a cord to a lamp, it could tip over and fall on him. Don't leave anything with strings laying around. If he ingest a string, you'll have a whole mess a trouble then. It could get wrapped around his intestines. Same thing with any toys that have any small parts on them. He could chew them off and choke on them. No matter what room he's in, make sure there's nothing poisonous around, like household cleaners or antifreeze. Even fabric softener sheets are toxic to cats. If he's in the bathroom, make sure the lid to the toilet's down so he doesn't somehow get in and drown. Alot of people put that blue stuff in their toilet to keep it from smelling and if your kitty should drink it, that could be real bad news! Don't leave any plastic bags around that he could get tangled up in and suffocate. Just try to think of what all you would do if you had to baby-proof your house and go from there. Hope some of this info helped. I had to actually put baby locks on my cupboards because both of my cats would get into the trash can underneath my kitchen sink and take out whatever they thought looked yummy or fun to play with!

Consider getting a second kitten. I have heard that if you have two kittens, they'll keep each other entertained. Therefore, they won't make as much mischief with your belongings as one bored kitten looking for ways to amuse himself.

I leave my cats at home while I'm at work and I'm gone from 8-5:30 and they dont ruin anything....so I'm sure your cats should be fine.
Just make sure they have plenty of water & food & also get some toys for it so it wont be bored =]
