Golf of that age are excellent, fiestas of any age are fiestas. It's a no brainer my friend.

I think that you should shell out for the damage on the golf. It is a more pleasurable car to drive with more power and space. Also, the fiesta as someone else mentioned, is still a fiesta and will depreciate like a stone but the golf is one of the best hatches to hold its value. the age dosent really matter because if you want the better car i would opt for the golf.

I'd go for the Fiesta.
I hired a 1.4TDCi Fiesta in Italy in 2004, and it was lovely to drive.
Biggest problem was the lack of padding on the door armrests.

The Golf is older, needs repairs (have you priced a new front bumper, with painting?), and is a base model with little equipment.

How much money you going to spend fixing the VW?

It is 2001 VW and a 2004 Ford - not that I am a huge fan of either but logic says the one that is new and not smashed.

How long you planning on keeping the car as you need to think what the next buyer may prefer.

that's a tuffy. in my opinion, collision damaged cars are good for parts. on the other hand, the fiesta is a POS. sorry
