I do contract work in various state offices throughtout the week. In one particular office, there is a lady who is constantly laughing. They other state workers are lazy gossips, so I'd have to take on the whole group to confront her. I've tried music headphones and can still hear that laugh. She sounds like a drunk. Any suggestions?

Perhaps you could contact the worker's supervisor and mention the issue to him/her. Explain that the loud laughter effects your ability to perform your work. If after a time, nothing has happened, I would share the problem with the contract monitor who established the contract with you and inform them of the problem.

Both of these measures should provide a remedy.

There is nothing you can say or do to her that will make her change. You are right; the rest of the office will turn on you.

Take careful notes during the day as to how she and the others are failing to do their jobs. Look up any polices concerning office behavior and conduct. Write an anonymous letter to your supervisor and his/her boss. Explain the violations you have observed and that her behavior is distracting. Leave all emotions out of the comments and be to the point. Look in the phone book and pick out a good law firm. Cc them at the bottom. Mail the letters to your immediate supervisor and his/her higher up.

Give it a couple of weeks and see what happens. As with many government offices, employees tend to be lax and supervisors as well. When there is no a profit margin to be considered people tend to not worry about their position. Government employees are hard to fire. Sometimes they need to remember their purpose at work.

I think I'd just have to let that one go. Sorry, but it would only cause trouble if you were to say anything. Just work fast so you can get out of there as soon as possible.

Strong laxatives in her coffee. She won't be laughing when they kick in.
