Not all apples are sweet. Some are tart. But, it is the level of sugar (fructose) in the apple that determines it's sweetness.

If you were to plant the seeds from an apple you liked, it would not grow the same tasting apple, but would more than likely produce bitter apples. When a tasty apple tree is found branches from it are cut off and grafted onto the root stock of apple trees that are not tasty.

Fuji, Gala, Braeburn, Pink Lady, Rome, etc So many taste treats to chose from !

So that they are appealing to mammals. Apples actually want to be eaten, that way their seeds get spread throughout an area. This is true of all fruits and why they are so tasty.
