Is this ever done on a 1st or 2nd date ?? I thought this may be a good idea to establish some kind of contact.

I do that with my girlfriend sometimes but mostly we hold hands. I'd say it's about 80% hands, 15% elbows, 5% neither.
For some reasons we do it more when going on "special occasions" Dances, Semi-Formal stuff, Dinner, etc.
If you are just dating someone for the first or second time, I think it's a great idea because it's not as "couple like" as holding hands, but you do have personal contact and gentlemen like behavior.
