I was told that locals pay a different price at stores and restaurants then the tourists in Hawaii. Is this true?

There are a few places that give kamaaina rates for locals. There are also places that give military discounts. In Waikiki there are stands all over the place that have little booklets that lots of coupons in them for local attractions and restaurants.

Not really true. I've noticed that if you shop at regular chains, the prices are all tagged. However, if you go to tourist areas which do not display their prices, then its very likely higher than similar items which are price tagged. For example, the night market vendors between Kalakaua & Kuhio don't have prices on their merchandise which means they'll often quote a higher price and open to negotiations (better word for bargaining). Then its up to you to come back with a lower price. Nothing to lose, if they wouldn't sell, just stroll away. No hard feelings. Its just part of the business.

Of course locals seldom shop there.

Yes, it is true on some places. Kama'aina rates are given to local to encourage them to shop/visit places. The Iolani Palace is open to local for FREE on 1st Sunday. An local identy is required at the ticket counter.

But big stores like Wal Mart, K Mart etc does not give Kama'aina rate, all standard.

Yeah, depends on the place. It's called Ka'amaina rates. I haven't seen that at stores and restaurants but it does happen going to certain attractions. Like Hanauma Bay and The Missouri.

Yes, but it's not much. It's called the Kamaaina rate. (Local rate). Most places offer 10-20% off. You usually have to show your local drivers licence.
