I know none of us can say for sure, but what are some ideas of why the material universe would have come into existence?

It's a learning ground for our consciousness to incarnate and experience free will and karma and attain enlightenment.

We are part of the universe except some of us want the universe to be part of us. They create a god in their mind and promote themselves to be the greatest creation of this god they created.

p.s. I found that the atheists are almost answering in unison. Could that be atheism is creating a sense of existence?

There is no why. The universe is because it is. It is just that simple. Acceptance is the answer. We accept things the way they are because is is usless not to. Love and respect each other to make the world a better place.

It serves no purpose. It just is.

Kind of like how gods serve no purpose. The difference is that gods don't exist.

It just did. Not purpose. No meaning.

Now, we here on Earth, seem to be capable of creating our own purpose and meaning. But the universe just is.

It is an illusion to be surmounted. Speculation on the reason for its existence is generally non-productive.
