My husband has two discs that are so far gone he is always in pain. He finally went to a pain management center. They will give you medication that does help you, however you are strictly monitored on it. He has had to try 3 different kinds before getting some relief. Muscle relaxer don't always help a condition like yours. Your Dr. should know anyway if you were a substance abuser by how quickly you need a re-fill. Hope this helps a little

You need to see a pain specialist. Part of the program is trying different medicines combined with exercise and therapy to alleviate your pain. The specialists are careful not to over prescribe controlled substances.
It doesn't hurt to mention that you read about certain drugs and ask the doctor if the are appropriate for your condition.
I had to try several different prescriptions after back surgery. Some that were touted as miracle pills did not work for me or made me sick. You need to find something that helps your pain.

I know the feeling very well.I am moving to upstate New York in a few months and will be experiencing the same issues because I am now on many hard core prescription meds that are addictve. With my many present doctors they know I only ask for meds as needed because they know me well and my serious spinal issues. So my best advise is to go to a doctor that you are comfortable with. I will walk out on doctors I don't feel good about. When you need help you need a cool doctor that you can build a relationship with and will let you recommend meds you think will help. Good luck to you......

Something like soma is a good choice, it won't make you terribly groggy, if you take it at bed time . Better than that though, I would go for a full body massage a day or two before your trip. This will allow your muscles to relax and your spasms to lessen. It is ideal for your situation. Then you might not need any meds. or you might just need them sometimes, like after alot of walking.

There is a book that teaches about muscles, pain and referred pain anywhere in the body. The principle is that the muscles get knots called trigger points which make the muscles tight that then press on nerves. It teaches how to get them to release which gets rid of the pain.
The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
I also use a chiropractor and massage therapist as needed.

you shouldn't be afraid, the doctor isn't there to judge you, he's there to answer your questions and concerns. just ask him, and tell him the way you're telling it here, that you looked up information on WebMD and wanted some more information and recommendations. it could be that your insurance might not pay for the meds you want, so let your doctor tell you. if the meds your taking now aren't working enough that you're looking for alternative medicine, then you need to let the doctor know.

If you have tests showing that you do have DDD, or other back problems you should ask your doc to help you reduce the pain. Let him go through the list he knows it way better than you. If you allow him to help you there will be no question about your wanting help and not just drugs.
