My coworker and I are having a debate about if there is any way to know God exists (its really really slow today). I don't think there is a way to know and that people just assume but they really don't know. He believes in God and claims to know God exists through faith. I think that's BS because faith is only needed in the abscence of knowledge and that he is just making an assumption. Am I missing something? Because I simply don't understand how someone can know anything through faith.

Faith eliminates the need to know by virtue of the strength with which one believes. The error, however, is to believe in something that cannot be demonstrated conclusively as real or true. Those who have faith don't care that God can't be demonstrated or proven as their faith alone is proof enough for them. This kind of illogical, circular reasoning is something that will never satisfy rational, intelligent, thinking folks. The simple fact is, however, is there is no credible evidence to prove god exists. One would think a supreme being who insists that we believe would do more to convince us of its existence. Based upon what we know at present, there is no god. But that knowledge doesn't impact the faithful in the least as their faith isn't dependent upon knowledge, only belief.

There may be those among the irrational who reject the Theory of Gravity as inadequate to explain why things fall down no matter how much evidence they are presented to validate said theory. But faith alone, no matter how many people share it, will never make something real that just plain isn't.

Faith doesn't necessarily mean belief without knowledge. I believe that my son will grow up to be an exremely smart little boy. I don't have proof. I have no idea what the future will hold. I know that he's not an idiot right now, but that's not proof for the future. But I do believe and have faith in him. Whether or not I'm right or wrong will be proven in about 15 years or so. We have the Bible, but many don't see it as proof. I see just the fact that we're alive as proof that God exists. I can't believe that something as complicated as me, let alone the environment, trees, plants, and animals could all be here by an accident.
Hebrews 11:1 - "Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld."

Gravitation is the reason for the very existence of the Earth, the Sun, and every object in the universe; without it, matter would not have coalesced into masses and life would not exist. Gravitation is also responsible for keeping the Earth and the other planets in their orbits around the Sun; the Moon in its orbit around the Earth; the formation of tides; and various other natural phenomena that we observe.

Earth's atmosphere is a layer of gases surrounding the planet Earth and retained by the Earth's gravity. It contains roughly 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.04% carbon dioxide, and trace amounts of other gases, in addition to water vapor. This mixture of gases is commonly known as air. The atmosphere protects life on Earth by absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation and reducing temperature extremes between day and night.

Sientices say that ther is some thing missing from the element chart .

According to Galen, these elements were used by Hippocrates in describing the human body with an association with the four humours: yellow bile (Fire), black bile (Earth), blood (Air), and phlegm (Water).

Some cosmologies include a fifth element, the "aether" or "quintessence." These five elements are sometimes associated with the five platonic solids.

whereas Fire, Earth, Air, and Water were earthly and corruptible, since no changes had been perceived in the heavenly regions, the stars cannot be made out of any of the four elements but must be made of a different, unchangeable, heavenly substance.[1] The word aether was revived by late 19th century physicists as a term for the proposed invisible medium which permeated the universe, the luminiferous aether.

so for now we call it the missing elements
THE 1ST OF ALL ELEMENTS = GOD with out this element no element could work

It is so hard to explain faith to a non believer, but let me try. When you ask Jesus to come into your heart and sincerely mean it, there is a tangible feeling that comes over you. It is better than any high you can obtain from any drug! The term "born again" comes from this because you truly are born again! You become different! It's as though someone has suddenly switched on the lights in a world of darkness and the world suddenly makes sense. Not that you have all the answers, but when you look to God life is different. Faith is definitely more than an "assumption". Christians know with certainty that Jesus is for real...You feel his presence! You sometimes can feel or even smell when the Holy Spirit is in the room with you. You accept by faith and then God does the rest. Look at it this way, if you are wrong and all the Christians are right, then you are going to hell; but if you are right and all the Christians are wrong, then nothing at all will happen to all the Christians. Asking Jesus into your heart and life must be a sincere thing though. God sees the heart and if it is just words spoken without sincerety...then you will not be saved. He will only come into your heart and life if you truly desire Him to do so.

You can't know through faith. Faith, by definition, is a belief that is not based on proof. Therefore your coworker can only believe that God exists, he can't possibly know. If he did know for sure that God existed, he'd be able to prove it and we could get rid of the Religion section on Yahoo Answers!

Do you believe air exists? You cant see it, and sure we breath something in, and something blows. Humans are making an assumption by saying that what blows and that what we breath is air. Do you think the earth just popped up out of nowhere? DO you think that evolution is the cause for everything? Because, if evolution was real, which its not, then we, or something should have evolved again, and humans haven't evolved, i there's the same kinda things on earth now, that there was hundreds of years ago. Oh, and do you believe that the bible was some mans imagination? And the human body is to complex for it to have just popped up.

You are the one who is correct. Faith is defined as belief without any supporting evidence or proof.

He'll probably pull out the "faith is the proof of things unseen" Bible quote out of his butthole, but if faith is evidence, then having 'faith' in anything else is proof that it exists. For instance... I can have faith in a purple steel-eating dragon living in my garage, and therefore it exists by the Biblical definition.

Faith is powerful. When you have faith you don't need to be able to quantify it to someone else, you know for sure yourself.

That being said, you're right. Knowing something that you can tangibly prove and having faith that you know something but can't prove is the fine line.

Faith is the act of believing without understanding, but your question reminds me of my testimony.

The day I gave my life to Christ, I was standing in the midst of many other men raising their hands praising the Lord. I sensed something in the air around me. I remember thinking, "is that you God" . . suddenly I was overwelmed by a feeling that dropped me to my knees with a resounding "YES!"

I know God is real because when I asked to know Him, He showed himself to me.
