It does depend on the offence, but being polite, speaking clear and fully alert and responsive works wonders for most, and be sure not to say anything that incriminates you

Instead of worrying about what not to say, how about worrying what not to do. Don't do stupid things and you won't have any contact with the police, so you won't have that worry.

Never make any, repeat ANY, "deals" or give information without YOUR attorney present. Only the prosecutor can decide whether to proceed or not. Police are just head-hunters and paper-pushers.
