just check the basic desktop properties before you get all crazy with a system restore or anything like that.

I could be she changed some settings or it could be loading a different user profile. The icons on the left of the taskbar are called the quicklaunch. Right-click the taskbar and unlock it. Then right-click again and goto toolbars and select quicklaunch there. The other setting adjustments are similarly easy fixes if that's the only problem.

Kinna hard to advise you not knowing what operating system you use ... but if you have Win 98 - boot the computer while holding the Ctrl key down. Keep holding it down until a DOS page opens.

Use the arrow keys to scroll down to MS Dos Prompt and enter.

At C: Type in "Scanreg /restore"

The computer will get a good registry from a past start and you use the arrow keys to pick one. Reboot and you'll be OK

In WinXP you can use the Control Panel where there's an option to restore.

The computer will say a good registry has been installed.

That should solve your problem

You might try hitting Control-Alt-Del, going into the task
menu and then selecting the task you want to kill and
killing it.

Or you might just tell it to reboot.

If it won't reboot, power cycle it.

However, the root of the problem is that
your operating system is defective.

I recommend replacing it with one of:
