I usually go through sleep paralysis about twice a month. I usually see shadows and hear voices, but I can't move at all. There was one time I was able to float around the room which was weird. But most of the time I get freaked out and it usually happens when nobody's around or other people in the room are still sleeping.

This happened to me a couple of times in college. I found myself staring up at the ceiling, with my eyes open, and vaguely aware of my surroundings. Like you, I was unable to move. I saw a sort of black cloud hovering near the ceiling. The first time it happened it freaked me out for the rest of the day and I was scared to go to sleep that night. It happened again maybe a year later, only this time I knew what was going on and I just sort of "jerked" myself into consciousness. My sensation was that I was just asleep... with my eyes open and able to see. I also seem to recall the sensation of "floating", but just a little... not around the room. It has not happened again since college... many years ago.

My suspicion is that it has something to do with irregular sleep patterns (going to bed and getting up at wildly different hours), not enough sleep, and too much stress. There are lots of different sleep abnormalities, and regular sleep patterns seem to go a long way in correcting many of them. If I were you I would ask my doctor about it.

If you believe in this kind of thing...it sounds like you are having an astral projection/out of body experience. Might be a little far fetched but floating around the room and the sleep paralysis do kind of go hand in hand with that. Its said that the sleep paralysis is caused by your astral body/soul leaving your physical body.
